Beans are collectible items that have made an appearance in two games to date. Additionally, the Beanish are a race of bean-like people.
History
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Beans are plentiful in this game, and while collecting them is entirely optional (and time-consuming), they will help Mario and Luigi. There are four kinds of beans in the game, and each is acquired in a different way.
- Woo Beans are green and are usually found after fighting enemies around Beanbean Castle Town.
- Hee Beans are yellow and are awarded as prizes in minigames in Stardust Fields, Hoohoo Mountain, The S.S. Chuckola, and Little Fungitown.
- Chuckle Beans are red and hidden underground. When Mario and Luigi come across an "X" or some other distinguishing feature on the ground, Mario can perform the Luigi Dunk to pound Luigi underground. By popping out of the ground at the spot of the "X", Luigi will uncover a Chuckle Bean.
- Hoo Beans are brown and the rarest type. They are found in invisible ? Blocks in seemingly dead end areas. By jumping around, one might uncover one of these Blocks, always containing one Hoo Bean. Additional invisible ? Blocks containing five or seven Hoo Beans can be found in Joke's End and the Koopa Cruiser after it is repaired. As a final supply, there is a pair of Oho Jees south of Oho Oasis running a surfing game that awards Hoo Beans, along with Woo and Chuckle Beans.
All beans can be taken to the Starbeans Café, where they are blended into stat-boosting coffee for Mario and Luigi.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
In this game, Beans are dug up by Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. These can be traded to Fawful in his shop, Fawful's Bean 'n' Badge, for Badges. The Beans in this game bear a resemblance to Hee Beans, although they are never actually given any name other than "Bean".
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Mario & Luigi collect beans that will boost stats. An oversized Bean appears as an attack of Crawfuls, and also Magifoofa.
Trivia
- A man in Beanbean Castle Town says that most of the Beanish people are too lazy to search for them; that is why there are so many Chuckle Beans scattered about the land.
- Beans have appeared (in different forms) in other games; Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars had a (surprisingly beanless) area known as "Bean Valley", Paper Mario featured a Magic Bean item, and beanstalks have appeared in many Mario series games.
