Hobgoblins are strange-looking ghouls that inhabit Kero Sewers. They wear ragged clothing and carry lanterns (just like Lantern Ghosts). Hobgoblins never fight by themselves; they always accompany other monsters in battle, including Rat Funks and Big Boos. Hobgoblins attack by clawing their opponents. Additionally, a Hobgoblin can use a number of magic spells that cause status ailments. One such attack is Dark Claw, which poisons one of Marios allies. The other is Elegy, which mutes a party member, making them unable to perform special attacks.

Hobgoblins are relatives of Straw Heads.
