Is there some reason this is written as "Heavy Parabeetle" without a hyphen, while the normal "Para-Beetle" is? Culex 17:14, 12 April 2010 (EDT)

A lot of pages match the unhyphenated version. My guess is some games use the hyphen and others don't, so whomever created the article was more familiar with games that's don't use it, or NSMB Wii might not use it. •Turkishcoffee «Talk» TC Personal Can.png 17:19, 12 April 2010 (EDT)
Hmm... I browsed some pages, like Koopa Paratroopa and Paragoomba, none of them use a hyphen, so I think that Para-Beetle may be the incorrect one, that is, if it's incorrect. --TucayoSig.png The 'Shroom 17:26, 12 April 2010 (EDT)
Or the original creator of this article got the name wrong. Anyone have an official source for this enemy's name? Culex 18:56, 12 April 2010 (EDT)
I have the offical Prima guide (which has been wrong a lot of times, not just with Mario games), and on the page for 7-6 it has a tip: "The Heavy Para-Beetles will drop when you stand on them, while the small ones will carry you upward." This guide always hyphenates Para-Bettle, but leaves "Paratroopa" unhyphenated (as "Koopa Paratroopa"). However it lists Piranha Plants as Venus Fly Traps (they're the kind in pipes, in world 3-5, page 68 item number three in the bottom left corner). --•Turkishcoffee «Talk» TC Personal Can.png 03:07, 13 April 2010 (EDT)
Okay, apparently those do shoot fire. My mistake. --•Turkishcoffee «Talk» TC Personal Can.png 03:18, 13 April 2010 (EDT)
Sounds like the title should be corrected. Moving. Culex 09:34, 13 April 2010 (EDT)

The Name[edit]

Where did the name "Heavy Parabeetle" come from? And why does the article mention that they're also called "Mega Parabeetles"? Where are they called that? Vent (talk) 10:18, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

I assume the "Mega Parabeetles" name is from the Prima guide, as a few articles about NSMBWii enemies state "also called [name] in the Prima guide" when the Prima guide gives a different name. No idea where "Heavy Para-Beetle" is from, though note to self: stop reading diagonally. --Glowsquid (talk) 13:50, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
No i'm pretty sure Heavy Para-Beetle is the official prima name and Mega Parabeetles is just some unofficial name made up by a blocked user (also the Glowsquid the conversation above us shows that the Heavy Para-Beetle name comes from the Prima Guide :P) Raven Effect (talk)

Mario Maker Appearance?[edit]

Do the winged Big Buzzy Beetles in the Mario Maker games count as Heavy Para-Beetles? While they are the same in that they are large Para-Beetles, they do not behave in the same way, instead rising upwards when stepped on, like normal-sized versions. 131.96.222.228 12:50, January 6, 2025 (EST)

You raise a good point. After all, if a game were to feature regular "Big" variants of Hammer Bros or Fire Bros, we wouldn't consider those to be redesigned Sledge Bros and Heavy Fire Bros. So why do that to this fellow Heavy / Mega enemy? Blinker (talk) 13:11, January 6, 2025 (EST)
I also agree. But I feel like having a separate article for "Mega" or "Big" Para-Beetles would be unnecessary, especially since large Para-Beetles that behave like normal-sized ones do not appear in any other Mario titles, with the only large Para-Beetles being the Heavy Para-Beetles, which, as you stated, behave differently. CBFan5 (talk) 12:24, January 7, 2025 (EST)
Splitting is not the only option. Could also move the info on the embiggened Para-Beetles to Para-Beetle or, since they the same as their smaller counterparts, remove it entirely. Blinker (talk) 16:57, February 21, 2025 (EST)

Remove Mario Maker info[edit]

A Yellow Block from Super Mario World This talk page section contains an unresolved talk page proposal. Please try to help and resolve the issue by voting or leaving a comment.

Making the above section into a proposal. The big Para-Beetles in the Super Mario Maker series simply look like large Para-Beetles, as opposed to the unique expressions and proportions of Heavy Para-Beetles, and have different behavior on top of that. Not only that, the Japanese name of Heavy Para-Beetle and the existence and naming of Heavy Fire Bro make it clear that Heavy Para-Beetle is to Para-Beetle as Sledge Bro is to Hammer Bro. Not just big enemies, but also fat and subsequently heavy ones, which is reflected in their unique mechanics (ground shaking and moving down instead of up). If a game were to have a big Hammer Bro enemy, it would not be a Sledge Bro. These are not Heavy Para-Beetles.

As the title indicates, this proposal aims to remove Mario Maker info from this article. At first I thought it could be moved to Para-Beetle, but then I realized there isn't much to say. You can use Super Mushrooms on Para-Beetles, and it makes them big. Goes without saying, but in any case that section will have to be rewritten, so simply mentioning the possibility of Super-Mushroom-ing shouldn't be a problem.

Support: Lightweight[edit]

  1. Blinker (talk) Per proposal.
  2. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - considering the JP name's connection to Sledge Bro, lumping these is comparable to lumping Big Koopa Paratroopa with that other "Big Troopa," so to speak.
  3. Rykitu (talk) Per all.
  4. Nintendo101 (talk) Per proposal.
  5. Camwoodstock (talk) Makes sense to us, and to be honest, we never really understood why this was over here given they don't look alike, and hardly even act alike. Per proposal.
  6. Arend (talk) When you give a Hammer Bro in Mario Maker a Mushroom, it clearly becomes a Sledge Bro. But they didn't even put in the effort to turn a Buzzy Beetle with wings into a proper Para-Beetle. This is not a Heavy Para-Beetle, just a big Buzzy Beetle with wings.

Comments (Paratext)[edit]

Was this big guy called Mega Para-Beetle in the Japanese release of Super Mario Maker? PrincessPeachFan (talk) 08:57, March 5, 2025 (EST)

You mean the generic big Para-Beetles? I don't think they were called anything. Blinker (talk) 14:51, March 6, 2025 (EST)
Not in the games themselves. You'll need to check the strategy guides. SmokedChili (talk) 12:43, March 9, 2025 (EDT)
