A Mario Kart game for the Nintendo Switch 2 was revealed alongside the system in a "first-look" trailer released on January 16, 2025, and is the first Super Mario game announced for the system. The art style of the game's characters appears to have changed significantly, resembling that of the 2D illustration drawn by Shigehisa Nakaue, much like the in-game art style of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The number of racers per race was increased to 24 compared to the previous 12.[1]

It is the first original traditional Mario Kart title since Mario Kart 8 in 2014.
