Fire Mario and Fire Luigi are the forms Mario and Luigi take after powering up with a Fire Flower. The form was first introduced in Super Mario Bros. and is one of the few forms to appear in more than one game. Wario also made use of a Fire Flower to become Fire Wario in a last-ditch attempt to defeat Mario in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

When Mario or Luigi come in contact with a Fire Flower, they can become Fire Mario or Fire Luigi, respectively. Wario was also able to transform into Fire Wario in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
In the form's first appearance in Super Mario Bros. (and later reappearance in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels), both Mario and Luigi's hats and overalls would change to white and their shirts would change to red. They also gained the ability to throw fireballs which could topple enemies (even otherwise unbeatable ones such as Spinies) and is their only means of defense in underwater stages. However, Mario (or Luigi) would revert back to Small Mario (or Small Luigi) if they were to take damage.

This form was introduced in Super Mario Bros. where Mario and Luigi's shirts and hats would change to white and their overalls would change to their respective colors (red for Mario and green for Luigi) and they would gain the power to throw fireballs which could topple otherwise unbeatable enemies (such as Spinies) and would be the only way to defeat enemies in underwater stages. However, the form was lost if Mario (or Luigi) were to take damage.
After a brief absence from Super Mario Bros. 2, Fire Mario returned in Super Mario Bros. 3 with one slight change in that Mario and Luigi would both change to an orange colourization instead of their clothing changing (however this may be because of limitations on the NES as official artwork and remakes of the game depict Mario with a red overalls and a white hat and shirt).
Wario's Fire transformation didn't change the colors of his clothes. It simply added a feather to it's cap, probably because of the Game Boy's monochrome screen, since in this game, Fire Mario has a feather on his cap too. Besides this, Fire Wario has also the ability to shoot fireballs, which are much bigger than Mario or Luigi's.

This is one of the few forms to appear outside its introductory game but is often downplayed in favor of newer power-ups.
Fire Mario's appearance in Super Mario World was the first time he appeared in-game as depicted in artwork. The form remain unchanged from previous appearance, however, if Fire Mario performed his new Spin Jump move, he would throw two fireballs at either side of himself.

This form made its first 3-D platformer appearance in Super Mario Galaxy which featured a few changes, such as the form now being time-limited instead of lost by taking damage and that the fireballs were extinguished by water. Mario could throw fireballs with the Star Spin.
While Fire Mario didn't appear in Super Mario Land, a form very similar to it, known as Superball Mario, made it's first and only appearance.

In the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, this form was called Super Mario or Super Luigi, while that usually is the name of the status when using a mushroom. The term "super" could just be tacked on to signify that they are stronger. Toad turned into this form in the episode "The Fire of Hercufleas". Princess Toadstool turned into this form in "The Trojan Koopa", although she did not shoot fire.

In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins the form's appearance was changed again, this time only simply adding a feather to the top of Mario's cap (most likely due to the Gameboy's inability to display the colour difference). Additionally, in the final phase in the battle with Mario, Wario used a Fire Flower to become Fire Wario (which simply added a feather to his cap, similar to Mario's) and resorted to fighting solely by throwing fireballs, however he was still defeated, which caused him to revert to Tiny Wario and run away.

After a fourteen year long absence, Fire Mario returned in New Super Mario Bros., functioning exactly the same as in Super Mario World, however, all of the new power-ups which appeared would simply over-ride this form.

Strangely, the comics almost never featured either form. The only appearance was in the prologue short, "The Legend"; in one panel, Luigi was shown throwing fireballs at some Beezos, but he was wearing his regular outfit rather than his Fire Luigi suit.

*In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Bowser could also take on this form, where his skin turned orange, and Mario or Luigi would have an orange cap and shirt with red overalls.  This colorization was likely based on the appearance of Fire Mario/Luigi in SMB3, which may have been caused by NES graphic limitations.

Fire Mario
Fire Mario, shooting a fireball.

Fire Mario's appearance in Super Mario World was the first time he appeared in-game as depicted in artwork. The form remain unchanged from previous appearance, however, if Fire Mario performed his new Spin Jump move, he would throw two fireballs at either side of himself.

While Fire Mario didn't appear in Super Mario Land, a form very similar to it, known as Superball Mario, made it's first and only appearance.

Fire Mario made it's 3D platformer debut in Super Mario Galaxy, found in the Freezeflame Galaxy and Dusty Dune Galaxy, with a few changes, such as the form being time-limited instead of lost by taking damage (which meant Mario could now be hit and still retain this from), the fireballs could no longer be used underwater and that Mario wouldn't be able to Star Spin until the form wore off.

In the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, this form was called Super Mario or Super Luigi, due to their actual Super forms being their regular forms. some of the differences from the games where that the form wasn't just acheived with Fire Flowers, but also Stars, a Magic Pendant and at one point the shock from a high voltage and as well as granting the Mario Bros. with the ability to shoot fireballs from their fingers, they gained extra strength, speed and even the ability to fly .Toad also used this form in the episode "The Fire of Hercufleas". Princess Toadstool turned into this form in "The Trojan Koopa", although she did not shoot fire.

In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 The form was changed to match it's appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3, down to the orange colourization and would only allow Mario to throw fireballs. Bowser, with the help from the Power Pendant, could also use this form in the episode Super Koopa.

In the Super Mario World cartoon the forms appearance was changed again to match it's appearance in Super Mario World, however, the form had very limited screen time.

Strangely, the comics almost never featured either form. The only appearance was in the prologue short, "The Legend"; in one panel, Luigi was shown throwing fireballs at some Beezos, but he was wearing his regular outfit rather than his Fire Luigi suit.
