Why? What?

The Super Mario Wiki was created on August 12th, 2005, 13:47 EDT. On August 12th, 2006, this wiki was off to a good start, but still there was only a small amount of active users. On Saturday August 11th, 2007 with a userbase finally forming, we celebrated our wiki's existence with an awards show on 30 of our favorite Mario topics, including favorite games, music, items, series, moments, enemies, and more.

Now with 38,099 users and counting, that time is approaching again. An amazing 62 voted on our first awards last year, but before actual voting gets underway, we need all the help we can get – and that possibility comes with the Awards Committee.

Awards Committee

The requirements/duties are quite simple for being part of this group:

  • Must have an account on the forum, for the special group board.
  • Must be able to get into IRC chat channel #mwikiawards, via Special:Chat, Darkmyst, ChatZilla or otherwise to meet most Friday OR Saturday night for meetings, probably for two hours in the 6-10p range.
  • Will be revising the 30 awards and their nominees to a) update for this year (i.e. all 3 Most Anticipated games have come out) and b) replacing some of the less interesting ones.

There will be several chats to do this, so there is no rush, and we can have fun. SIGNUP CLOSED

Userpedia Awards?

Userpedia is a sub-wiki of ours where many of our active users enjoy creating comics involving sprite versions of themselves or others. Encyclopedia speaking, it is a wiki covering this wiki, but articles about users, important pages and the like have additional details added to them to give Userpedia itself a whole different feel than MarioWiki. It is closing in on 1000 articles.

Userpedia is being included as a separate, smaller sub-set for this year's awards, as long as it is all in good fun, without any competition between the creators of the nominated works whatsoever.

Voting for this may be redirected to Xzelion (talk) or ChaosNinji (talk).

Schedule

We're well on our way to 30 Mario Awards and 10+ Userpedia Awards, with voting starting Sunday, June 8th, 3:00p EDT and concluding Tuesday, July 8th, 8:00p EDT. Future dates before 8/8/08 will be put up beforehand.

Tournaments

During the early afternoon before the awards, channel #mwikionline will be hosting two tournaments for Super Mario Wikians in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii. There are two tournaments for each game, meaning that contestants can enter a total of four tournaments. It is not necessary for contestants to join all four tournaments.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

MarioWiki will be hosting a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. Sign-up is welcome to anyone, although it is recommended that contestants are at least good enough to beat a level 9 computer. The rules for the singles tournament are:

  • 4 stock, 9 minute time limit.
  • No items (including Smash Balls).
  • Only stages allowed in this topic (may be subject to change).
  • Win 2 out of 3 to advance to the next round.
  • Up to two contestants can be entered from one Wii. To prevent people from creating a "back-up" contestant, the two contestants from one Wii may be tested in a standard battle to see if the other person in the tournament is real.
  • If lag is an issue, the match will still be continued as normal and will not be an excuse to forfeit the match. If the lag is due to a moving stage, the match can be moved to a non-moving stage for less lag.

Although optional, matches can be viewed. This means that up to two other people will be able to watch the actual match without interfering with it. However, if the match starts to lag, we can kick the spectators out.

There is a secondary tournament, one for double. However, this will take place after the singles tournament and most of the rules are the same. The rules for the doubles tournament are:

  • 5 stock 10 minute time limit.
  • All items allowed, but only on low-medium. Items CANNOT be turned off, or be put on high. Item choice has to include every item in the game, no item in particular can be turned off.
  • Only stages allowed in this topic (may be subject to change).
  • Friendly Fire is ON.
  • Win 2 out of 3 to advance to the next round.
  • Up to two contestants can be entered from one Wii. To prevent people from creating a "back-up" contestant, the two contestants from one Wii may be tested in a standard battle to see if the other person in the tournament is real.
  • Team pairing will be based off of results in the singles tournament. However, if a contestant did not enter in the singles tournament, he or she will be pair up with another random contestant. If two contestants share the same Wii, they can automatically join to be on the same team, although it is not required to do so.
  • If lag is an issue, the match will still be continued as normal and will not be an excuse to forfeit the match. If the lag is due to a moving stage, the match can be moved to a non-moving stage for less lag.

Mario Kart Wii

MarioWiki will also be hosting a Mario Kart Wii tournament. Sign-up is welcome to anyone, although it is recommended that contestants are at least good enough to race on 150cc. The rules for the racing tournament are:

  • To determine who wins, points will be tallied in two GPs. The most points a contestant can get is 60 in one GP, assuming they had 1st place in 4 races and 120 points if the contestant gets first place in 8 races. Whoever has the most total points wins the tournament. If there are more than 12 contestants, another game will be made with similar rules. The winner of that game will go one on one against the winner of the first game.
  • All courses are open for selection.
  • If anyone is caught using cheap tactics, they will be disqualified. This specifically applies to those driving backwards to get good items and purposely mess up the race.
  • Two people may enter from one Wii. However, they must be in the same race.

There will also be a separate battle tournament. This is based off of Balloon Battle. team pairing will be completely random, since teammates cannot be chosen. The rules for the battle tournament are:

  • There will be one set of 2 out of 3 Balloon Battles. Whoever scores the most on the winning team is the true champion.
  • All battle stages allowed.
  • Two people from one Wii allowed. However, they must be in the same battle.
  • If there is an uneven amount of people, a random person will have to drop out.

Sign-ups for all tournaments also start on June 8th, 2008, deadline by July 4th, 2008. Prizes will be determined when sign-up begins. </show></showhide>
