The Treacherous Mansion is the final and longest mansion that Luigi visits in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. It is a large museum and is also the location of the final Dark Moon piece. Many rooms on the first floor of the Treacherous Mansion are based on the previous mansions in the game. Almost every ghost that Luigi encounters appears here, though most of them are stronger. King Boo comes to this mansion to open a paranormal portal to unleash almost every ghost that Luigi has ever encountered, such as Greenies, Slammers, a Gobber, Sneakers, mummies, Hiders, and Creepers, and most of these ghosts are either shielded, strong, or equipped with a weapon of some form. This multitude of ghosts will bring about the destruction of Evershade Valley. There are also gargoyles inside and outside the mansion.

The Treacherous Mansion is the only mansion in the game that requires Luigi to unlock just one door; the rest of the doors are already unlocked. It is also the only mansion besides the Gloomy Manor and Old Clockworks that has multiple music tracks; the track changes whenever Luigi looks through a window or crack in the wall. It is also the only mansion to have two missions primarily dealing with ghost-capturing: Paranormal Chaos and Terrifying Invasion. It is also the only mansion to have multiple false doors. Finally, it is the only mansion whose respective Dark Moon piece and Possessor ghost are not found in the mansion's vicinity.

The bottom four exhibits in the mansion are based on the four previous mansions in the game in some way. The Dark Age Exhibit represents the Gloomy Manor due to the knights found in the manor (despite not having the same music tracks), the Jungle Exhibit represents the Haunted Towers due to both having botanical designs, the Ancient Exhibit represents the Old Clockworks due to the latter having an Ancient Egyptian-like basement, and the Ice Age Exhibit represents the Secret Mine for their icy themes.

History

The Treacherous Mansion is an abandoned museum positioned right in the middle of a giant ravine, which becomes cut off from land access after Luigi reaches the front steps. According to E. Gadd, the mansion contains artifacts and items from Evershade Valley and beyond, making it the most "precious" of the mansions. The mansion is slightly changed to a spookier feel after King Boo arrives. It is called the Treacherous Mansion likely because it could collapse into the ravine below. It, however, does not at any point.

In-game description

This massive mansion is filled with exotic exhibits created by its late globe-trotting owner. Oh, and it also contains the strongest paranormal signals ever recorded!

Missions

Mission Image Description Mission Goal Objectives
E-1 Front-Door Key The Treacherous Mansion's intro in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon The paranormal activity in this mansion is completely off the charts! Stay on your toes, and start looking for the Dark Moon piece. Use the Front-Door Key to open the Front Entrance of the Treacherous Mansion. Once inside, start looking for the Dark Moon piece.

Follow the Polterpup, and recover the Front-Door Key.

  • Unlock the front entrance.
  • Recover the Front-Door Key.
E-2 Double Trouble King Boo appearing behind Luigi in the mission Double Trouble. I assigned a Toad assistant to take care of the valuable exhibits in the Treacherous Mansion. Let's find him. He might know a thing or two about the Dark Moon piece. Search the main floor of the Treacherous Mansion for the Toad assistant, and bring him back to the Bunker.

It turns out E. Gadd assigned two Toad assistants to take care of the exhibits. Find the other Toad, and send both Toads back to the Bunker.

  • Find and rescue the Toad assistant.
  • Rescue the Toad in the Ice Age Exhibit/Jungle Exhibit. (Depends on which Toad is rescued first)
  • Send both Toads to the Bunker.
E-3 A Train to Catch The Poltergeist stealing the book in the mission A Train to Catch. The Toad curators brought a security-camera image back with them. Maybe it'll give us some clues about the next Dark Moon piece. Use the makeshift rotor to activate the stairwell in the Inner Courtyard. Then rush to the Train Exhibit and rescue Mario.
  • Activate the stairwell in the Inner Courtyard.
  • Get to the Train Exhibit and look for Mario!
  • Find the Poltergeist and the book he took! / Find the Boffin and reclaim the book.
E-4 Ambush Maneuver
The mission Ambush Maneuver, as the Big Boo is about to be vacuumed Luigi, King Boo is in the Train Exhibit! Let's strike now, while we have the element of surprise! Get in there, defeat King Boo, and rescue Mario! King Boo seems to be up to something inside the Train Exhibit. Ambush him while he's distracted.

The miniature model in the Train Exhibit was a trick! Don't let Big Boo get the best of you.

  • Ambush King Boo, and rescue Mario.
  • Escape the trap.
E-5 Paranormal Chaos The mission Paranormal Chaos, as all the ghosts escape from the paranormal portal I'm getting strange paranormal readings on the Terrace. We'd better send you in to inspect the place. Reach the Terrace, and discover the source of the strong paranormal signal.

King Boo has sent a horde of ghosts to start a paranormal riot. Capture all of the ghosts before they become too powerful to be stopped!

  • Inspect the Terrace.
  • Capture all ghosts before it's too late!
Boss Stop the Knightmare The mission Stop the Knightmare, as the Possessor ghost shows itself. The portal on the Terrace is still open, but we've got to hurry. Button up those overalls, my boy! It's time to battle King Boo! The portal has brought you to an unknown location! Look for the possessor ghost and the final piece of the Dark Moon.
  • Retrieve the Dark Moon piece.
Bonus Terrifying Invasion The mission Terrifying Invasion. We have an EMERGENCY! The Parascope is detecting whopping paranormal signals in the mansion! Luigi...THE END IS NEAR! Ghosts are invading the Treacherous Mansion! Go to the outbreak points and capture all the ghosts at each location in order to prevent a paranormal catastrophe.
  • Capture all the ghosts as soon as possible!

Trivia

  • This is the only mansion where Luigi has to rescue two Toads in one mission.
  • While Luigi is under the mansion in the Dungeon Cells, Professor E. Gadd will call him, but with no interference with the Dual Scream.
  • The Treacherous Mansion is likely based on William Hope Hodgson's 1908 novel The House on the Borderland, in which the denizens of the titular house are assaulted by creatures from another dimension. Similarly, the house in the novel gets a large portion of the ground below it spirited away, leaving the house stranded on a ledge directly above a large water-filled ravine.
