(Merloo being related to Dimentio may further be implied by the fact that one of [[Carson]]'s stories vaguely suggests that Dimentio may have written the [[Dark Prognosticus]], much how Merloo wrote the Light one to counter it.) However, this is unconfirmed. It is much more likely that his modern-day descendant is the Dimention-Flipping wizard Bestovius.

Merloo is a member of the Tribe of Ancients who is indirectly seen in the form of a stained glass window in Mirror Hall of Super Paper Mario. According to Tippi, Merloo was very wise in his time and is even thought to be the author of the Light Prognosticus. (However, Merlon states that Merlumina is the Light Prognosticus's author; it is unknown who is the canonical writer.) Interestingly, unlike all other sages among the Ancients, Merloo possesses no current inhabitant of Flipside or Flopside who bears any direct resemblance to him, although some other "Shaman"-like characters of past Paper Mario games do look slightly similar to Merloo, who takes on the appearance of a mustache-less, green-robed character slightly resembling Merlon. It is also very interesting to note that Merloo is said to be a powerful, dimension-controlling magician; he therefore shares many skill-related characteristics with the villain Dimentio, making him a possible relative candidate. It could instead be that his modern-day descendant is the dimension-flipping wizard Bestovius, though neither have been confirmed as relatives.

He bears very minor resemblance to Toad, though this may be coincidental.
