The first Ghost House of the game, as well as the first course with multiple exits, is located in this world. The name of this world hints at the strange shape of the island (which looks indeed like a donut, when seen from above). The Donut Plains are ruled by Morton Koopa Jr..
The Donut Plains later reappears as a series of courses in Super Mario Kart. The courses are later reused in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and the second course of the series was again brought back in Mario Kart DS.
