Item distributions for Battle Mode.

Will you check the item distributions for Battle Mode? I'm curious on them, as they depend on the time and balloons, rather than the difference between the player in 1st place. Gold Luigi (talk) 11:36, 28 January 2017 (EST)

I will check them, and in the end I'll probably use a modified version of the headers from the PRIMA guide, but due to their number (18 sets of 10 distributions) it will be some time before I upload them (hopefully I manage to do so before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes out).--Mister Wu (talk) 21:02, 28 January 2017 (EST)

Data generating process

How did you calculate the probabilities? I was wondering if you did extensive test drives (e.g. ~200 times per distance) or you have some access to a Mario Kart API.

I did not calculate those probability values, those are the tables directly ripped from the game and thus used by it, the only part that was added are the titles of the tables, the column headers and the row headers of Battle Mode. The row headers of races are derived from the ITDS tables. The row headers of Battle Mode are derived from the PRIMA guide, they probably derive from the ITRT table, but I haven't been able to decipher it.--Mister Wu (talk) 09:43, 9 June 2017 (EDT)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Are these values still valid for the Nintendo Switch Edition of Mario Kart 8?

These tables aren't used by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; those tables haven't been ripped yet but differences in the item probabilities are already evident, the Bob-omb obtainable in first place being one of the most apparent.--Mister Wu (talk) 09:52, 9 June 2017 (EDT)

I have noticed another difference in the tables for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it being that the Bob-omb is not obtainable in 1st place in Mario Kart 8 deluxe's Bob-omb Only mode.

Simplification, for easier readability

I suggest changing a few terms so it's easier to read, such as changing the long "drivers controlled by players" and "drivers controlled by software" to a shorter "human players" and "computer players" or just "players" and "CPU"/"Computers".

For battle mode, I highly suggest making the minutes left into rowspan. Plus changing "More than 2", "Between 2 and 1" and "Less than 1" to easier "Over 2 min.", "2–1 min." "Less than 1 min." or a short "Before 2:00" (or 5:00–2:00), "1:59–1:00", "0:59–0:00" which would also help with determining which is valid at the exact "2:00.00" and "1:00.00" mark. "Minutes left" and "Balloons left" can just be a short "Time" and "Balloons", the data right below clarifies what it means.

I also don't see it being neccessary to title every table with "Item probability distributions", this is the "Mario Kart 8 item probability distributions" article, after all. So I think the full title "Item probability distributions (Grand Prix races, drivers controlled by players)" should be changed to "Grand Prix races, players".
