Green Shells are green Koopa Troopa shells that first appeared in Super Mario Bros.. These are the most common type of shell. Koopa Troopas wearing Green Shells were less intelligent than their red shelled counterparts. They would fall off cliff if they reached the ledge.
Similar to a Red Shell, the Green Shell will be launched when the Koopa Troopa wearing it is jumped on. In later games, they can also be held and thrown.
Green Shells (referred to as "Shiny Shells") could be ridden in Super Mario 64. When a character jumps atop a Green Shell, the character can travel at a fast speed. It also allows the character to cross over un-walkable terrain, like lava or icy water. Additionally, when the character grabs a Green Shell from the deep, blue ocean; the character will hold the Green Shell as the character can move faster while the character is in the ocean.
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the Green Shell is a Bros. Item that is used to kick towards enemies. If an adult uses the shell, the baby of himself hops onto the shell. When the shell gets kicked, it will speed towards the foe, and bounce off at the other bro. You must press that brother's button to kick the shell back. When the shell is about to hit the enemy, press the button of the baby on the shell to spin the baby and deal extra damage. The longer you go, the faster the shell moves.
In the Mario Kart Series, Green Shells will shoot forward in a straight line. Unlike the Red Shell, the Green Shell is able to ricochet off of walls. After about five ricochets, the Green Shell will automatically disappear. Green Shells also come in singles or triples, in which case they circle around the kart until all three are fired. In this state, they can be used as a barrier, useful for blocking contact with other shells (except Blue Shells) and Bananas. If the character comes in contact with any other driver, the the other driver will be knocked over. In Mario Kart DS Wi-Fi mode, they could not be dragged by holding the item button.
Green Shells also appear in the Super Smash Bros. series. A Green Shell is a regular item which can be picked up and thrown at other characters, hurting them. It can also be activated by hitting it or jumping on top of it, which causes it to shoot in a certain direction, knocking out any characters on the way.
Green Shells, as well as Giant Green Shells, appeared as offensive power-ups in the Gamecube and Wii installments of the Mario Strikers Series. In these games, they were collected in packs of three green shells. Once used, they would be fired out in the direction the opponent is facing. This would then trip them on the ground, thus, halting their movements for a small time period. The shells, unlike the Red Shells, do not home, and move in one straight path, until the hit a wall, which makes them curve, or hit a player, which destroys them. The aforementioned, Giant Green Shells, cover a wider range than the Green Shell.
Green Shells reappear in Super Mario Galaxy as an offensive weapon. Unlike Super Mario 64, Mario can only hold the Green Shell, not ride it. Mario can throw the shell in a straight direction until it hits something. Strangely, it keeps going even if the Green Shell is thrown off an edge and keeps going that direction. Underwater, it allows Mario to swim faster and with greater ease. It can also be thrown at underwater creatures. The other two varieties of shells that appear in Super Mario Galaxy are Red Shells and Gold Shells. These act more or less like Green Shells.
Trophy Information from Super Smash Bros. Melee
Hit or throw a Green Shell, and it'll follow the contours of the environment, causing heavy damage to any characters it hits. These Koopa shells have many uses in the Mario series: they've been picked up, kicked, swallowed and even spit out. Mario just uses them as tools to pummel Bowser's numberless henchmen.
Trophy Information from Super Smash Bros. Brawl
An item that, when thrown or jumped on, careens across stages and hurts any player it hits. Green shells follow the environment's contours as they go and reverse direction when they hit walls. They really send opponents flying, so they're very effective as throwing weapons. If a shell's approaching, stop it by jumping on it. This technique is used in the Mario series.
