Re:New account

Cool, I was going to suggest registering since you seemed to be fairly active already. LinkTheLefty (talk) 03:00, 27 August 2018 (EDT)

Thwomps and junk

There was. It was mentioned at the top. As for the Fat Guys, there's no way that was a mistake, it was a "King" variant. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 03:45, 27 August 2018 (EDT)

Well they repurposed a generic Boo artwork for Big Boo, so it wouldn't surprise me. This was for the same game that reused Chomp Shark's sprites exactly with no changes at all. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 03:52, 27 August 2018 (EDT)

Huffin Puffin and Fluffin' Puffin

In my opinion, it should be split or renamed. I actually suggested it a while back, but nothing ever came of it. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:12, 28 August 2018 (EDT)

Since you're not yet autoconfirmed, I can propose it for you if you'd like. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:28, 28 August 2018 (EDT)
No, but you should be promoted to autoconfirmed status sometime tomorrow. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:41, 28 August 2018 (EDT)

Re:Green Toady's Japanese description

From Shogakukan:

フラフラとづき、ふれるとにスピードアップしてちゃんをさらってく。さらわれたらすぐにいかけてうばいそう。

My translation:

Waveringly approaching, contact makes it suddenly speed up and snatch the baby. As soon as he's taken away, let's give chase and return him.

Basically what you'd expect, I should think. LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:53, 29 August 2018 (EDT)

I meant that the guides just describe whatever one happens to be pictured. So Shogakukan's Game Boy Advance guide shows and describes Green Toady, but the Super Famicom version has Kamek's Toady and the Yoshi's New Island one has Solo Toady, and they all have the name Kokamek. Image reuploads

Uploading a new version of an image can be glitchy. Press Ctrl+F5 to refresh your browser and have the most recent image show up. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:04, 30 August 2018 (EDT)

You're welcome! Now to delete all those image revisions. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:09, 30 August 2018 (EDT)

Additionally, when you move images, be sure to correct the links that lead to it. You can find these links by clicking the "What links here" tool on the sidebar while on the page. The file redirect should also be marked for deletion. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:20, 30 August 2018 (EDT)

Sure, I'd just prefer if the file-naming standard of the project was followed. And try to make them distinct. If I have them in a specific pose (such as the open-mouthed Hootie and Dangling Ghost), I'd like if that were still in the image, as it shows more of the enemy than otherwise. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:25, 30 August 2018 (EDT)

Also

Hello, FanOfYoshi. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly categorize the file. It's simple to learn how to do so. Just search for the correct category by starting with the following groups:

Images Audio/video files

When uploading, copy the full title of the category and insert it in square brackets into the summary text box below the {{aboutfile}} template, replacing the {{uncategorized}} template entirely. If you're using the upload function from the text editor, simply add the category link to the description. For example, files related to the game Super Mario World would use:

[[Category:Super Mario World images]]
or
[[Category:Super Mario World media files]]

Please consider the above information before uploading more files. Keep in mind that some files can belong to multiple categories. Do not put images into the media files category, or vice versa. If you continue uploading files without categorizing them correctly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

For this instance, the files you just uploaded would use Category:Yoshi's New Island Images. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 02:09, 31 August 2018 (EDT)

For images, it's "[[Category:", followed by the name of the game, and then "Images]]". [[Category:Yoshi's New Island Images]], for example. The category link would replace the {{uncategorized}} template's place. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 02:13, 31 August 2018 (EDT)

Signature

Template:Sigbox-raw Hello. Just letting you know that your signature currently violates a few rules outlined in MarioWiki:Signatures:

  • Your signature is too long. It should be shortened to fit in the box above.
  • Your signature should include your username, or a variation/nickname that lets others know it's you (just "Yoshi" isn't very recognisable).
  • You're adding your signature as raw code. Now that you're autoconfirmed, you should copy/paste your signature code to a signature subpage (User:FanOfYoshi/sig), then change your preferences accordingly (in the text field under "Signature", type in {{SUBST:nosubst|User:FanOfYoshi/sig}}, tick the "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)" check box below it, then hit save; your signature then appears as {{User:FanOfYoshi/sig}} plus the timestamp when you sign with ~~~~ instead of the entire code (the individual Yoshi GIF, contributions URL etc.))

More information can be found on the signatures policy page I linked. Marie costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 08:02, 1 September 2018 (EDT)

Yep, looks good. Just copy/paste that to your signature page and change your preferences. Marie costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 08:08, 1 September 2018 (EDT)
You're still signing with raw code. Did you add {{SUBST:nosubst|User:FanOfYoshi/sig}} to the text field and tick the checkbox in your signature preferences?
This is just so your signature page is transcluded to every comment you sign, not the actual coding, so if you ever change User:FanOfYoshi/sig, the changes are reflected in all of your previous signed comments. This is also helpful if, for example, a larger version of the image is uploaded and it gets in the way of other talk page comments, since you can resize it on one page rather than having to go back and do it for every time the image was used. gimp

From what I've heard, Gimp has terrible user-friendliness. Use Paint.net instead. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 12:24, 1 September 2018 (EDT)

Paint.net is a different program, which I use for sprite and art transparency. However, it requires a download, but is free and open-source. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:48, 1 September 2018 (EDT)

Re:Giant Raven's description in generic Raven?

From Shogakukan:

きくなったひなキュー。地続きの地形なら、天井でもいて移動する。地面にいるときにんでそう。すと、れたアイ テムが出現することもある。

My translation:

A bigger Hinakyu. It is on Earth-like terrain, as well as walks on ceilings and walls. A grounded stomp will defeat it. Upon defeat, a hidden item may also appear.

The guide unfortunately doesn't give a name to the giant Raven. LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:20, 1 September 2018 (EDT)

Project page

Your project page is meant for working on projects related to helping the wiki. What you have on your project page looks more like fan ideas that would be better suited to our forums. The information can be brought there, but it shouldn't be on the project page. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:18, 3 September 2018 (EDT)

No. Subpages should only be used for wiki-related matters. There is a Fan-creations board on the forums, though. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:26, 3 September 2018 (EDT)
Yeah, on your main userpage is fine, as long as you don't spend too much time on it. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:59, 3 September 2018 (EDT)

Re:Solo Toady picture

I wouldn't know. All I know is that due to the most recent emulator site (it was a self-proclaimed paradise) getting gutted, I can't get good non-YouTube screenshots until the next emulation site inevitably starts up. Hard to take screenshots from a game on a regular 3DS, that's for sure. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:06, 3 September 2018 (EDT)

Was that last one intended to go to me? It didn't seem like it was in response to anything I said. I was more talking about myself above. Also, you seem to still be inputting your sig in raw code, just by the way. (assuming that's being copypasted?) Anyways, with the lack of shoes, that'll make converting from my regular Toady sprites to Solo Toady sprites a lot easier, but currently my non-schoolwork time is going to a ripping project for Donkey Kong Land on the Super Game Boy. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:19, 3 September 2018 (EDT)

File redirects needing deleted

You don't need to tell them every time, there's a maintenance page that lists them that they check regularly. There's been a lot of file-moving recently, so it'd definitely be seen. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:48, 4 September 2018 (EDT)

Moving files

For future reference, after moving a file, keep in mind that the pages currently using the file (found at the bottom of the file page under "File usage") should be updated to use the new file name. After doing that, the old name must be marked for deletion with {{delete}}. Marie costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 06:19, 4 September 2018 (EDT)

Re: Yoshi's New Island quality

As far as I know, that is a hardware modification to capture footage directly from the 3DS. HANS is software-based, but doesn't capture video. It's use is to capture screenshots by PNG. I wouldn't recommend hardware modifications for screenshots, unless you are OK with dismantling your 3DS. There is an alternative screenshot software that is said to be better than HANS, but it installs itself onto the 3DS and may require system firmware modification. That is why I recommend HANS because it doesn't modify hardware or the 3DS firmware. To review:

  • HANS (only needs an entry point, or exploit, to run and doesn't require any modifications to the system)
  • NTR (installs itself on the 3DS and may require system firmware modification to run properly)
  • Hardware mod (dismantle the 3DS to capture game footage)

Hope this helps. Visit r/3dshacks for help how to homebrew your 3DS (for exploits). Also, to save consecutive edits, use the show preview button next to the save page button.--Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 10:25, 4 September 2018 (EDT)

Blarggwich

Oh, Blarggwich doesn't use "sprites" other than the eyes. The body is made from the same type of isosceles triangle object that most other squash-and-stretch enemies and objects in the game uses, as well as the polygons in Star Fox. It's a Super FX thing, which is why only a few games had it. It also allows for sprite rotation and the tile pileup regarding the feet of many creatures in the game. And while Super Mario World and Kirby Super Star appeared to have sprite rotation in some boss fights, these are actually background layers, and thus a different story completely. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:35, 7 September 2018 (EDT)

Re:autoconfirmed

I say the Snapjaw / Snap Jaw article can probably be split without much problem since no one has come up with an objection in all that time, but there seems to be conflicting opinions about Huffin Puffin, so that one should definitely have a proposal. I recommend three options: 1) Split Huffin Puffin and Fluffin' Puffin, 2) Rename to Fluffin' Puffin, and 3) Keep as Huffin Puffin. That last one is because it's suggested that even though Fluffin' Puffin is the more recent name, it only applies to Yoshi's Woolly World, so it Huffin Puffin would be interpreted as the more common name for the usual, non-wool version, making it an exception. Or if you want to make the proposal only about the split, that's fine too, but there should be some discussion about the current name afterwards in the event it doesn't pass. You can follow the how-to here, but if you're still not sure, I can do it for you if you'd like. (Also, I have fond memories of Yoshi's Island on SNES as well as the Super Show back when it was airing, so I like it.) LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:55, 7 September 2018 (EDT)

Rocky Wrench

I think they should both be classified as derivatives of each other since there's no hard evidence for or against the other two choices. This may sound blunt, but I already detailed my argument in my vote. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 11:08, 10 September 2018 (EDT)

RE: Signature

Yep, your signature code comes out as {{User:FanOfYoshi/sig}} (a transclusion of your signature page), which is correct. Marie costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 10:39, 11 September 2018 (EDT)

Friend boxes

Looks like you are using friendboxes, though it doesn't appear that you asked for them and are custom made. Usually you have ask first, and it's usually even stated on their userpages that you should, including mine. According to MarioWiki:Courtesy:

  • "Unless you have someone's permission, don't add their friend userbox to your userbox tower or create a fake box on their behalf."

If you want to ask someone if you can have the friend userbox, you can, but the ones you created should be removed.

That said, you can replace the one you made with mine if you want :) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:07, 11 September 2018 (EDT)

I am also fine with you keeping me on your list. You can use the one found on my userpage if you want! --A sprite of a Flame Chomp from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.TheFlameChomp (talk) 12:12, 11 September 2018 (EDT)

Re:Needlenose

Yes, it's a little confusing because Needlenose and the original Spiked Fun Guy are both plainly referred to as Sanbo (Pokey) in Japanese versions and are considered the same thing despite the difference in appearance in behavior, and the "Pokey (Yoshi's Island series)" also has a different name altogether, Heading Sanbo/Pokey. Not to mention that standard Pokeys eventually appeared in the Yoshi franchise in Yoshi's New Island alongside Needlenoses (still Sanbo in Japanese), which were soon replaced by a different type of enemy called Pokey Poms in Yoshi's Woolly World. I think the simplest thing to do is to consider them all separate entities, as they are cactus-like but have notable differences (although Cactus Jack is currently considered a derivative of Needlenose). Also, looks good, I like the idea of each word directing to something else. Keeps it condensed. LinkTheLefty (talk) 13:20, 11 September 2018 (EDT)

Hootie

Can you make the cropping a bit more symmetrical on that? The close-cut bottom bugs me....looks like it could potentially be missing a pixel or two. It's just my minor OCD, but is that possible to do? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:41, 11 September 2018 (EDT)

Much better. By the way, "von" is lowercase, as it literally means "of." Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:15, 12 September 2018 (EDT)
I know that fully well, I have that sheet and many more in an MS Paint document I use to make sprites and have for quite a while. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:22, 12 September 2018 (EDT)
Prima is absolutely official. As for the Encyclopedia, Dark Horse's previous Nintendo book, The Legend of Zelda: Arts & Artifacts, simply gave several Japanese-named enemies poor Romanizations (as well as doing this to some bosses that had actual English names), so there's no telling. LTL speculated that the release pushback may be quality control to prevent that from happening again, but again, there's no telling. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:45, 12 September 2018 (EDT)
(Somehow I predicted your immediate response) It's fine, everyone slips up every now and again. I'd suggest a proposal for splitting those though, as that's a fairly big change. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:51, 12 September 2018 (EDT)
