During the events of the game, Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario are taken to Bowser's dungeon. They find a large door that can only be unlocked with a key that rests on the other side of a short bridge, but rickety according to a sign. When the player attempts to cross it, the bridge breaks and the trio are sent plummeting, but Mario and Luigi climb up easily with Paper Mario in the middle. This gives birth to the Trio Grab, which can be activated when the player presses R and presses A, B, and then Y to form into a stack. Paper Mario can then press Y to grab items in front of them that cannot be reached from far away. To return to a horizontal line, the player must press A or B.

Trio Grab

The Trio Grab is a move learned in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam. It can be used to grab objects the trio cannot reach, or pull back hooks to open bridges.

After the Trio Grab is learned, the R icon must be pressed twice to activate the hammer. Or, the Trio Grab icon can just be touched on the bottom screen.
