Story
The story begins when Luigi accidentally knocks over a book holding the Paper Mario world, releasing paper characters into the Mario & Luigi world.[1]
Gameplay
Overall gameplay is mostly similar to the previous Mario & Luigi games. Players control Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario simultaneously (Paper Mario using ).

- This is the first game in the Mario & Luigi series in which normal Koopa Troopas can be fought.
- Whilst the base game is technically a Mario & Luigi title, this is the first game in the Paper Mario series that does not involve any development effort from the series creators, Intelligent Systems and to be released on the same console as a previous game in the series.
- This game confirms that the Mario universe is actually a multiverse, with two different worlds (Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario) directly crossing over.
