Mario Maker is an upcoming game creator application for the Wii U which allows players to make their own 2D platform, Super Mario levels. It allows players to insert blocks, enemies, items, and more from the original Super Mario Bros.. There are some new modified power-ups, like a Luigi Mushroom that changes Mario into Super Mario, but looks like a stretched Small Mario. The game also allows switching between the graphical styles of various 2D Mario games. The game was announced at E3 2014 and is set to be released early 2015, as part of Mario's 30th Anniversary.

Graphical styles

The game will give players the option to choose the graphical styles from various 2D Mario games.[1] There are four styles announced thus far and it has been stated that others may also be available in the final game[2]. These games include:

So far, it's unknown whether the world themes of the later games will be used. Also, while the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3 has been confirmed, it's unknown whether the other game-exclusive items will appear, and whether or not they can be used in the other styles.

Differences from base-games

Although the recreation is mainly faithful, there are some minor differences in each styles. For example: in the original Super Mario Bros. game, Elevators could not be jumped through from underneath; this was possibly put in place to remain consistent with the Lifts in the New Super Mario Bros. series. Also Lakitus clouds can still be ridden and wall jumping is made possible.

Sharing system

Mario Maker will have a dedicated way to share course creations with the rest of the Mario Maker user base and Nintendo is implementing a system to share courses online, similar to what was done with Pushmo World and the later games in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

Customization options

Mushrooms and most enemies can ride on top of other objects and bounce off springboards. Enemies can have wings added to them, which in the case of Goombas and Koopas, makes them look and act like their familiar "Para" variations. Red Koopas can be spawned by shaking a standard Green Koopa until it turns red. Enemies can also be made huge. Players can add coins to multiple enemies and objects for them to produce coins.

Trivia

  • The Luigi Mushroom visually resembles a Dried Shroom. However, it actually comes from a bug that happened in development that made Super Mario skinny.[6]
