Not to be confused with Cosmic Mario.

Cosmic Clones (or Shadow Clones) are shadowy duplicates of Mario that first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They copy Mario or Luigi's every move, even copying their death animation if they die.

History

Super Mario Galaxy 2

A Cosmic Clone in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Cosmic Clones are created once a certain point is reached in a galaxy and will follow behind Mario or Luigi, performing every movement the plumbers make. Boards usually warn the plumbers that Cosmic Clones are present in the area, although they also appear when a Clone Comet orbits a galaxy.

Cosmic Clones will mimic whatever Mario or Luigi does, even if the landscape has recently been changed. For example, they will still appear to jump on a platform even if the platform had disappeared after plumbers used it. If Mario or Luigi get hit by a clone, they receive damage and the clone vanishes, with the rest of the clones then mimicking the plumber taking damage. Once the way forward is revealed, the clones disappear screaming loudly for a few seconds and leaving behind three Star Bits each.

Super Mario 3D Land

A Cosmic Clone in Super Mario 3D Land.

A Cosmic Clone appears only in the Special Worlds in Super Mario 3D Land, and it resembles Small Mario. Regardless of which character encounters a Cosmic Clone, it will always have Mario's voice, and resembles Mario's body and hair more than Luigi's, suggesting that the Cosmic Clone is resembling Mario only. A big Cosmic Clone's voice is slower and has a lower pitch, and it is twice the size as its usual. It can also destroy Brick Blocks upon contact. It functions identically to the clones in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but it has a purple outline instead of a red one, and only one appears instead of a group. Mario or Luigi can destroy it by touching it while invincible; normal-sized clones give three coins upon destruction, and large ones give ten. Upon reaching a certain area, the Cosmic Clone disappears. If the player leaves that area, the Cosmic Clone will appear again, even if it has been destroyed with a Star.

Mario Party: Island Tour

Cosmic Clones return in Mario Party: Island Tour, under the reference to Bubble Clones. These look nothing like they do in the other two games. These will also not mimic Mario at all. These also appear as CPU's in the minigame Claiming the Cube.

Trivia

  • The Cosmic Clone's theme is a remix of the Super Mario Bros. overworld and underground theme, like Cosmic Mario's (or Cosmic Luigi's) theme from Super Mario Galaxy. Additionally, it is a Shadow Comet theme with a half-step higher pitch, with an added opening section.
  • Cosmic Clones also share their voice clips with Cosmic Mario and Cosmic Luigi: they have a high-pitched voice that is strikingly similar to Shadow Mario's.
  • Only the first clone will make noises when jumping. If the player is hurt by the first Cosmic Clone, the other ones will not make any noises.
  • Cosmic Mario is strikingly similar to them; the only difference is their color and the Cosmic Clones' piercing yellow eyes.
  • Cosmic Clones are very similar to Bad Rayman from the Rayman series, both are dark versions of the character, and both copy their every move.
  • They are similar to Dreamy Mario in many ways; They are both beings that consist of multiple copies of Mario, and Dreamy Mario even has the same purple glow as the Cosmic Clones.
  • Cosmic Clones seem to act as a replacement for Cosmic Mario. He has not been seen in the Mario universe since Super Mario Galaxy, while the Cosmic Clones have appeared in many games since.
  • In Captain toad treasure tracker a simular foe appears but is a mummy clone of toad or toadette it travels as one like the cosmic clone in Super mario 3D land and has a purple ountline and can not be damaged with out being invinceable.
