Prior to the events of ''Dream Team'', the Pi'illo were the guardians of the Dreamstone and the Darkstone, two spiral-shaped rocks of tremendous power. However, [[Antasma]] - the bat king and he game's main antagonist - managed to steal the darkstone in his attempt to fulfill his own twisted wishes. The pi'illos engaged Antasma in battle to prevent this, but just before he was sealed away in the dreamworld Antasma shattered the Darkstone: the resultant chunks of the darkstone petrified ever last Pi'illo in existence, causing others to presume them to be extinct until Mario and Dreamy Luigi freed Dreambert towards the beginning of the game.
