The Space Zone is one of the six main locations in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. The Space Zone can only be accessed by beating the Hippo Zone.
Once Mario enters the Space Zone, Mario becomes Space Mario, complete with a space suit. Since Mario is on the moon, he moves higher than usual, slower than usual, and has trouble stopping.
The golden coin of the Space Zone is guarded by a variety of space monsters (including Spiked Space Slugs, Mini Ships, and Falling Stars) led by Tatanga.
