Anyone know what the "M" stands for?

According to the trivia:
The name "M. Bush" is a play on the word "Ambush".

I'm aware of that, but thank you.
I meant, what does the "M" stand for in the context of the game? The game developers named the enemy "M. Bush" for the pun on "Ambush", but when the people in the Mario world named the creatures "M. Bushes", what did they intend the "M" to stand for? I mean, we don't call an animal a "U. Gorilla" without the "U" standing for something, especially when there's a dot to show it's an inital.
When my siblings and I first played the game, we always assumed it stood for "Monster Bush", but I've had doubts ever since reading this article.
