A 1-Up Heart is basicly the exact same thing as a 1-Up Mushroom. The item first appeared in the Game Boy video games Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2. Once Mario finds the item, it will stay still until he obtains it, where as the 1-Up Mushroom will scroll off the screen unless he would quickly grab it.
The 1-Up Heart basically performs the same function as the 1-Up Mushroom, that is, awarding one extra life to the player. However, unlike the mushroom, the 1-Up Heart will remain in one place until Mario grabs it, whereas the 1-Up Mushroom would slide away from Mario unless he could quickly catch it. The item appeared in the Game Boy video games Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
