Burn is a status ailment found in the Mario & Luigi series and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. If a frozen character is burned, both status ailments are negated.

History

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Using his Fire Bros. attack, Mario can sometimes Burn enemies, making them lose some HP every turn, similar to Poison. A small flame floating above the enemy indicates the condition.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The Burn status ailment returned in this game with a more dire consequence — if a character is burned, that character will lose some HP every turn and will not be able to attack or dodge, like a combination of the Poison and Dizzy status ailment. Burn is indicated with the character visibly on fire.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

The Burn status returns in this game with the same effect as in Partner's in Time. However, only two enemies/bosses can cause the burn status: Calorite and Bowser to Mario and Luigi. Bowser can also cause the Burn status ailment to enemies by using his fiery breath.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

In this game, Burns again behave much the same way as Poison, that is, the character or enemy burned will lose one HP every turn for a number of turns. However, a burn usually won't last as long as poison. Burn is indicated by a small flame at the afflicted's feet. It can be cured by some random stage effects that involve water.
