After Rolling Thwomp had plowed through the remaining Sammer Guys in the first quarter of the Duel of 100, it was a cake walk to the second quarter. Time was running out; Sammer's Kingdom was getting dangerously close to destruction, and so Mario had to hurry. At the 26th Gate, Mario and his party surprisingly found King Sammer, happily awaiting Mario's arrival. King Sammer graciously told Mario that the Pure Heart was sitting on the arena platform inside a treasure chest. This confused Mario, as King Sammer had earlier denied any access to the Pure Heart unless Mario defeated all 100 Sammer Guys. Nonetheless, the plumber strode onto the platform and opened the treasure chest.

No Pure Heart was inside, and upon opening the treasure chest an explosion engulfed Mario.  However, when the dark clouds vanished, Mario stood unscathed; the explosion was a dud. King Sammer rushed onto the scene and, enraged, began yelling at Mario; not because of the explosion, but because the explosion didn't work. In a puff of smoke, King Sammer was gone, and in his place stood Mimi, who had been impersonating King Sammer (though it may be assumed that the King Sammer in Chapter 6-1 was real).

In her kimono-style clothes, Mimi decided to battle the heroes once more. Deciding not to use her true form, Mimi surrounded herself with rubees and flew through the air, attacking the heroes relentlessly. However, as per norm, Mario succeeded in defeating Mimi. Or did he?

Mimi shortly revealed after "defeat" that in truth she had succeeded. Her plot had been to stall Mario, therefore not leaving him with enough time to reach the Pure Heart before the Void destroyed the kingdom. Mimi cackled as she vanished, and as Mario reached the 30th Gate, the Void finally consumed the kingdom.
