Yoshi's Island is where the Yoshies originate. The island is part of a larger land called Dinosaur Land and first appeared in Super Mario World. It next appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island when Baby Mario fell down to the island after the Stork carrying the Mario brothers was attacked by Kamek Koopa.
In Yoshi's Story, Baby Bowser took over the island in an attempt to capture the Super Happy Tree.
