Gritty Goomba

A Gritty Goomba.

A Gritty Goomba is, in essence, a Goomba swathed in cloth with a spike and colored flag protruding from its head and sunglasses over its eyes. A Gritty Goomba is capable of summoning sand storms at will; however, this is the only thing it can do. It will use the cover of sand as a cloak, trying to run into the Mario Bros., who must counter with their Hammers.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario and Luigi had to protect Princess Peach from these Goombas (along with Spiky Snifits) as she crossed Teehee Valley to get to Little Fungitown. If they failed, the Princess would be taken down a Warp Pipe to one of their underground bases, which the Mario Bros. could infiltrate to save Peach. After returning to the desert to find the first Beanstar piece, all the Gritty Goombas had been mysteriously replaced by Anuboos.

• In the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, some Goomba Mummys made some appearances. These Mummy Goombas bore minor resemblance to Gritty Goombas.

• The Gritty Goomba's flag is red in Teehee Valley and green in Gwarhar Lagoon. This is because the Gwarhar Lagoon Gritty Goombas are stronger than their counterparts in Teehee Valley, as it is much later in the game.
