Splunkins[1] are enemies in New Super Mario Bros. Their name is likely a pun on "spelunking" and "punkin", which is slang for "pumpkin," given they are based on jack-o-lanterns. Splunkins are encountered in World 3-Ghost House, World 5-Ghost House, World 7-Ghost House, and World 8-1. They walk left and right, and if a Splunkin is stomped, it cracks slightly and increases its movement speed. If a Splunkin is stomped again, it explodes, defeating it. A Splunkin can be defeated instantly from either a Ground Pound or a fireball.
