It serves as the opening level for the game. It starts as Mario finds himself on a strange moon. He is greeted by a star shaped creature who turns into a Space Rabbit and takes Mario to it's comrads. The rabbits offer to tell him where he is if he plays hide and seek with them, they then scamper off to their hideing places. It is unknown what happens next, but they eventually take Mario to Princess Rosalina. Also in the level Mario will fight a giant Goomba for a key, and at the end he will have to rescue a Grand Star.
It is found in the Gateway Galaxy. Much like the castle in Super Mario 64, certain parts of the observatory are unlocked as Mario aquires Grand Stars.

The Cosmic Observatory is one of the many known areas from the upcoming Wii videogame Super Mario Galaxy. It will act as the 'hub' area, similar to Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64 and Isle Delfino from Super Mario Sunshine.

It is found in the Gateway Galaxy. Much like the castle in Super Mario 64, certain parts of the observatory are unlocked as Mario aquires Grand Stars.
