The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, better known as FLUDD is a water pack from Super Mario Sunshine. It can be used by Mario to spray water, by pressing the R button. With this, Mario can perform many tasks from enhancing his acrobatics to cleaning off Goop. It also seems the FLUDD is Mario's answer to Luigi's Poltergust 3000.
FLUDD and its nozzles were invented by E. Gadd. FLUDD seems to possess artificial intelligence, and can feel emotions such as joy and fear. Because of this, the water pack acts as Mario's sidekick and guide during his stay on Isle Delfino, giving Mario (and sometimes the player) handy advice.
After Mario's battle with Bowser, FLUDD malfunctions, asking Mario if it was of assistance before it shuts off completely. However, this doesn't spell the end for the sentient water pack; The Toads who came along on the vacation fix it up and return it to Mario. Right as the game ends, FLUDD happily exclaims, "The vacation starts now."
Several FLUDDs appear in Mario Power Tennis; these FLUDDs are used to clear away the Goop that can accumulate in the Delfino Plaza court. Also, in the mini-game Tic-Tac-Glow, the player must use balls of water shot by several FLUDDs to clear-away Goop in a tic-tac-toe like game.
It is revealed that a FLUDD-like item will appear in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2.
Nozzles
FLUDD is capable of equipping two Nozzles at a time, one of which must be the Squirt Nozzle. The others can be changed by breaking open Nozzle Boxes located at various points in Delfino Plaza and all of its surrounding areas. To change between Nozzles equipped, the player should press the X button.
- Squirt Nozzle – The basic Nozzle, which allows Mario to shoot water at enemies.
- Hover Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to hover in the air for a short time. Hover Nozzles are located inside blue Nozzle Boxes.
- Rocket Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to shoot up high into the air. However, he will fall back down without hovering. Rocket Nozzles can be found inside red Nozzle Boxes.
- Turbo Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to run at an extremely fast speed on land, or swim at an extremely fast speed in water or under the water. However, turning is difficult when using this Nozzle on land. Turbo Nozzles can be found inside gray Nozzle Boxes.
Trivia
- When FLUDD scans Mario in Super Mario Sunshine, a little window in the bottom left corner shows short gameplay clips of various Mario games, such as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64. After Bowser is beaten at the end and FLUDD is looking at Mario, the window shows "Game Over".
- FLUDD's name is a play on the word "flood", meaning a large mass of water that often causes chaos in a public area. It is also possible that his name is derived from that of Robert Fludd, an inventor who designed (but never actually made or released) many water pumps.
- FLUDD makes a cameo appearance in WarioWare: Smooth Moves in a microgame where he helps Mario put out a fire.
- In the german version of thw game FLUDD is called DRECKWEG 09/13. This makes it possible that there are12 more.
