It was first seen in Paper Mario, in which the book was found in the Shy Guy's Toy Box, stolen by a Shy Guy during the events of Chapter 4. When Mario gives the Gourmet Guy the Cake, the Gourmet Guy will be glad and crazy as he rockets out the area, dropping the Cookbook. When Mario gives the Cookbook to Tayce T., she will let Mario cook not one but two items to make a combined recipe (however, the Frying Pan is also needed for her new abilities to be used).
