Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas 'Shroom readers! I hope you enjoy this "festive" edition of Pipe Plaza, because we certainly enjoyed writing it for you.

Monthly Report

Written by Paper Yoshi (talk)

Hello, readers, and welcome to the last Monthly Report of 2016!! Things are pretty much the same here, so let's see the wiki stats for December, along with a comparison between them and the stats from last month.

(Credit goes to Stooben Rooben (talk), Super Mario Bros. (talk), and Viper26 (talk) for the table coding (I based this on Stooben's coding, which was later modified by SMB, myself, and Viper26 when each one of us wrote this section)

Tip of the Month

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

When your talk page grows too long, it can be difficult to find important messages and sort through any you may not have responded to yet. There is a way to de-clutter your talk page. You archive the contents of your talk page into a new page, something like "User:XXX/Archive1". To do this, simply copy everything on your page, then paste it onto the new page. You can delete everything on your current talk page after you save the archive, unless you have conversations that are still active.

RECENTLY PASSED PROPOSALS
PROPOSER SUMMARY OUTCOME DEADLINE
Bazooka Mario (talk) Allow .APNGs and create a notice template related to them.

A proposal to allow the APNG format for images and to create a notice template. The proposer argues that the GIF format reduced the quality of images that use semi-transparent values making them resemble poorly-cropped images that go against Super Mario Wiki's policy on transparent images. The proposer also argues that since the APNG format lacks universal browser support, a template on APNG should be create to warn users who use browsers without APNG support.

Eldritchdraaks (talk) Redesign the Bestiaries.

A proposal to redesign the bestiaries. The proposer argues that in order to make it simpler to create future bestiaries, they should use templates rather than tables. Each template should be based on the RPG infoboxes to keep the enemy stats consistent between the bestiary and infobox and all RPG infoboxes will use transclusion to display stats directly from the bestiary to assure the infoboxes will have the same stats as the bestiary.

Mister Wu (talk) Clarify the Wiki's policy on APNG images in .png files.

A proposal to clarify Super Mario Wiki's policy on APNG images. The proposer argues that a final clarification on this special kind of image should be done and the creation of two policies could be created.

Wildgoosespeeder (talk) Split into Adult Shine Block and Small Shine Block.

A proposal to split Template:Fakelink into Adult Shine Block and Small Shine Block. The proposer argues that Adult Shine Block and Small Shine Block are the official name for these blocks and they should get an article corresponding to their official names. The proposal also offers the the possibility of having an article corresponding to one of the two blocks and having the other block as a subsection.

Wildgoosespeeder (talk) GIF vs. PNG Sprites: What to Keep/Delete.

DKPetey99 (talk) Split Expresso from Expresso (Donkey Kong Country 2).

A proposal to split Expresso from the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest into his own page. The proposer argues that in the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 2, Cranky Kong said that he bought a new ostrich which means they are two different characters despite both ostriches sharing the same name and look.

A proposal to merge Giant Stu with Stackin' Stu. The proposer argues that Giant Stu and Stackin' Stu appear to be one of the same, and they both appear as one enemy group.

DKPetey99 (talk) Split Category:Super Mario 64 into Category:Super Mario 64 and Category:Super Mario 64 DS.

A proposal to split Category:Super Mario 64 into Category:Super Mario 64 and Template:Fakelink. The proposer argues that they are two different games and that Super Mario 64 DS brings new features and for those reasons, this game should have its own category.

LudwigVon (talk) Delete Beehive and move Beehive (item) to Beehive.

A proposal to delete Beehive article. The proposer argues that the article has a partconjecture template and a rewrite template because this article needs to be about a concise topic and there is no specific beehive to talk about. The proposer therefore suggested moving Beehive (item) to Beehive after the deletion.

Bold means a new entry. Italics mean inactive for at least a month. Bold and italics mean there's a glitch in the Matrix.

Thread(s) of the Month(s)

Baby Luigi's Do you prefer Waluigi's classic or modern design? won September's Thread of the Month - an exploration of the history of Waluigi and his vast characterisation. Runner-ups included SiFi's Today I went to this arcade game-type exhibit thing. (long story with pictures) and Freakworld's THE YEAR OF POOCHY.

Thread of the Month for October goes to Freakworld's THE MOST BROKEN THREAD ON THE FORUM, containing use (and, eventually, an explanation) of a glitch in the forum's BBCode that was discovered during 'Shroom Mafia III. NSY's proof that marioboards is dying was a runner-up (despite attempting to do my job for me), as was Nabber's post javelin quotes.

November's Thread of the Month goes to Anton's Since not all of you have me on facebook and can't see my late-night ramblings, a few funny observations on his own life. I didn't want to give it to an election-related thread, but Stargazing's If you feel at all threatened because of the results of this election... was a runner-up, as well as Nysic's just hell.

Quotes

  • "who needs 1080p when your screen is going to get cracked anyway" - Nabber, on the iPhone 7
  • "well like they say in brooklyn, early to youtube, early to catch the meme" - SiFi, on 2007
  • "Once I saw a guest deleting a topic on WhosOnline. I didn't sleep that night." - YoshiKong
  • "CNN: *inception noise* ONLY 38 MINUTES UNTIL ONE HOUR UNTIL WE HAVE A CHANCE TO START MAKING PREDICTIONS *10 minutes of ads* *dramtic music* *anderson cooper squinting* LETS LOOK AT EXIT POLLS *inception noise* BREAKINGG NEWS KEY RACE ALERT *Its kentucky* 1% HAS BEEN COUNTED TRUMP HAS WON MAYBE" - GBAToad, on the election
  • "no, see, it was the coveted Mario Fanbase Vote that put trump over the edge to win" - Superchao

Poll Committee Discussion

Written by Baby Luigi (talk)

What better way to write for the polls of this month than having a literal child in green write a 'Shroom section for the month of Holli Jolli Christmas? Uh, maybe Santa Claus himself but we all know he has a very busy schedule, and I guess I contribute it for having a particularly large wishlist filled with a bunch of toys.

Anyway, I'm here to talk about polls and stuff. Not sure if it's on anyone's actual wish list (and if it is, please give me a call and I'll say you're welcome) but here we go.

Committee News

I don't think anything in particular happened aside from hot delicious egg nog being served. We did host the usual Christmas-themed poll in the week of Christmas so I hope you voted what you want, and we'll make sure we mail the results to Santa so you can get the game you want.

Future Paper Mario titles (Niiue (talk) (guest submission) and LudwigVon (talk), November 6, 2016)

Analysis

  • Future Paper Mario titles: Unsurprisingly, people prefer that the Paper Mario series would stick back to its original roots than the series continue to be a experimental mash-up of different colors to see which color looks the best. Paint and stickers should be kept as part of the aesthetics, not be part of the central gameplay.
  • Do you tend to agree or disagree with Metacritic scores of Mario games?: Despite how much publishers love to advertise Metacritic scores on the front of their boxes and how much internet wars have been started over brightly colored numbers in boxes (I mean seriously, just look at the user review scores for some games, namely Mafia III and No Man's Sky), the vast majority of people simply do not care about the quantitative value the game has to random reviewers. It's nice to agree to disagree, isn't it?
  • How often do you buy Downloadable Content (DLC)? The ever so controversial practice of including DLC has only been in a select few Mario games. According to the poll results, people are lukewarm to the idea of DLC, but they're not frothing at their mouths at the opportunity to pay for much additional content. More people apparently don't ever buy DLC than people love to buy it but it's only by, like, a hair or so.
  • How often do you patrol our MarioWiki Recent Changes? The results of this poll indicates that the majority of users who vote in these polls are not regular editors and therefore, do not ever need to check our highly addictive drug so you can watch like a hawk to see which useless prey to devour and undo their edits. Lucky ducks, I say.

Conclusion

None of these poll results are particularly surprising, but it's still always interesting to see the results of mindsets of random people who vote in our convenience sampling poll because you never know when you'll achieve surprising results which does happen.

We'll be looking forward to what Mario game you want the most for Christmas. And if not, maybe a nongame Mario product like various amiibo will suffice. I know for sure that I want some new Mario amiibo. So uh, have a great Christmas, with the closing of 2016, and we all hope your cookies and milk will be gone by sunrise of December 26th. Check out next year, 2017, with Andymii (talk) and he'll show you what he's got.

Hello, readers! I'm your Spotlight manager and Pipe Plaza Director, Yoshi876. Welcome to Retro Feature, a section in which I delve deep into the archives to bring you the best blasts from the past. This time I bring you a section from a previously featured writer: Marioguy1.

I'm not going to delve into the history of Marioguy1, as I've done that before, instead I'm going to let you enjoy one of my favourite sections from The 'Shroom: Fading Into Obscurity. Sadly, that section seems to have faded into obscurity.

Fading Into Obscurity

by Marioguy1 (talk)

’Twas the night before Christmas,
And all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a mous...er???

File:Mouser.jpg
This guy aint no sugarplum!

Hey everybody! Marioguy1 here for another issue of Fading into Obscurity, with a pretty big character from the past of the Mario series for this Christmas issue, Mouser!

Mouser first came to light in Super Mario Bros. 2 - the ancient game between Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 that nobody knows anything about other than "they threw vegetables". He was the final boss of worlds 1 and 3, throwing not vegetables, but bombs at the Mario bros.

Mouser made his next appearance as King Koopa's main accomplice in the mysterious Super Mario Bros. Super Show! wherein he appeared a lot, serving as his his boss's henchman. He also made appearances in the outdated Nintendo Comics System as a species, known as "Mice". But, along with Super Mario Bros. 2, the Mario TV series and Mario comics, Mouser has mostly faded into obscurity...

Merry Christmas to all!
And to all, a good night.

The 'Shroom Report

Written by: Tucayo (talk)

HI, everyone! I'm your gift-wrapped Statistics Manager, Tucayo, here with a very festive version of The 'Shroom Report! What's festive about it, you ask? There will be Christmas trees 🎄. To refresh your memory, here's how this section works: in the Milestones section, writers will get mentioned every 10 team sections and every 50 all-time sections, teams will get mentioned every 100 sections, and The 'Shroom will get mentioned every 500 sections 🎄. All information is based off our Historical Sheets 🎄. This section will cover Issue 116 🎄.

This is the perfect place to mention an error that was pointed out to me in the Writer History spreadsheet and other mistakes that were noticed by me after learning of that error. Yoshi876 (talk) and YoshiKong (talk) were mistakenly credited with five Main/Staff sections written in 2009 (before they were both registered). This error was due to the cell coloring being accidentally copied from Yoshario (talk)'s row, which had happened before. When counting all of the remaining sections, the totals are brought to 47 and 19, respectively. Similarly, Icemario11 (talk) was credited for a nonexistent section in 2007 and Groden (talk) had one in 2009. These errors have been corrected, I apologize for this situation. If you see any errors in any of our spreadsheets, please let me know.

Tables are based off the End-of-the-Year Awards tables, so credit goes out to Crocodile Dippy (talk).

From Issue I (January '07) to VIII (October '07), it was WarioLoaf who held the record for most sections written; from VIII to XXIII (February '09) it was Xzelion; then came Stoob to tie on Issue XXIII; then it was myself from Issue XXIV (March '09) to 116 (November '16); and now, starting with Issue 116, it's going to be none other than Yoshi876, and there truly is no one more deserving of this honor than him. From his first section in Issue LXXVI (July '13), he has gone on to write a staggering 306 sections, having written a substantial amount of sections for each of our teams and over 120 sections this year alone. That's an average of over ten sections per issue, which is more than most teams have each month. And don't think for a second they're short sections, I can assure you they are detailed, well-written, and interesting sections. Congratulations to 876, may we have many more of his sections!
