Goombrats are a new species of Goomba who will debut in the upcoming Wii U title, New Super Mario Bros. U. They are short, lighter brown in color, and resemble acorns more than they do mushrooms. They have different facial features, and black stems on their head that look like tomato leaves. They also turn around when they reach edges, which is similar to the way red Koopa Troopas turn around when they reach an edge.
These sub-species will appear in the sky level of Acorn Plains and one of the levels in Challenge Mode. Goombrats slightly resembles the Goombas native to Dinosaur Land from Super Mario World, except the latter has no stem connecting their head to their feet and their acorn-resembling relatives do not come out of bubbles.
