A Ghost is the recording of a player's driving performance in the Mario Kart series. The concept of Ghosts has appeared in every game in the series so far. Ghost drivers appear as semi-transparent characters and will go through a race exactly how the player did when the player achieved the highest score. These drivers cannot be touched, but rather go through any other karts. Driving against one's own Ghost enables a player to directly match with his or her own record and thus to improve. Ghost data can only be recorded in Time Trial mode; recording this data may be impossible in races that are too long in some games due to memory limitations.
The item Boo has been referred to as "Ghost" in Super Mario Kart. It makes a character look similar to the appearance of recorded Ghost data: invisible to other players and invincible.
Trivia
- In Mario Kart 64, if the player turns off the music using the button and a Ghost drives past them, he or she can hear engine sounds coming from the Ghost.
