That's just creepy
Hawkmouths are the bird-head gates at the end of each level in Super Mario Bros. 2. To open them Mario or his friends will need to grab a Crystal Ball. They'll usually be out in the open, or otherwise guarded by a Birdo.
In Wart's castle, just before his room, an exposed Crystal Ball will be on some pillars and Mushroom Blocks in a chamber. When the Hawkmouth is about to open it's mouth, it flies down from the wall and tries to hit the player, much like a Phanto. Hit it with the Mushroom Blocks to beat it.
