Durians are orange spiky Fruit found in the game Super Mario Sunshine. Unknown to most players, this is an actual fruit from southeastern Asia and was designed accurately in the game.

Because of their thorn-covered exterior, Mario cannot pick up Durians. He can, however, kick them like a Soccer Ball, as F.L.U.D.D explains in the game. This would be hard in real life as Durians weigh around ten pounds (five kilograms) each.

Durians later got another Mario-related GameCube appearance in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which featured a whole world (consisting of two levels, specifically Battle for Storm Hill and Aerie Fortress) called the "Durian Kingdom". First appearance Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
Latest appearance Super Mario 3D All-Stars (2020)

Durians[1] appear in the Super Mario franchise as tan, spiky fruits, based on an actual fruit of the same name from southeastern Asia.

Durians in Super Mario Sunshine are interactive objects. Their thorn-covered exterior prevents Mario from being able to pick one up, unlike other fruits, but he can kick it like a soccer ball, as explained by FLUDD. Despite the durian's spikes, Yoshis can still eat them, turning their skin and juice purple, allowing them to turn enemies into purple forward-moving platforms.

In Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, one of the worlds is known as the Durian Kingdom, and it consists of two levels, Battle for Storm Hill and Aerie Fortress, both having an oversized durian for Donkey Kong to eat at the end.

Durians in Mario Party DS appear in the minigame Hexoskeleton, where, after being hit twice, Dry Bones starts ground-pounding the arena, creating a force that may drop a durian. If Dry Bones ground-pounds one, he will be stunned for a while before he starts to ground-pound the arena again. If the player wins the minigame twice, the player will earn the Boss Trophies collectable, which depicts a durian.

Durians in Super Mario Odyssey and the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker are spit out by Cookatiel as projectiles.

Trivia[edit]

 • In Super Mario Sunshine, there is a soccer ball object in the test level "test11" that acts similarly to the Durian and comes with a cardboard box to serve as a goal. It was most likely used for testing their functionality, specifically when Mario kicks it into a Pianta's basket.
 • In Pianta Village's tree that grows all of the kinds of the fruit in the game, knocking down the durian and going towards it at a specific angle causes Mario to be stuck in a loop of him kicking it at the tree, which reflects it back. It creates a large cloud of particle effects.[2]
