Kritters are a type of Kremling and the main foot soldiers of the Kremling Krew, led by King K. Rool. Kritters come in a variety of colors, but are most commonly colored green or blue. As a basic representative, Kritters are named "Kremling" in some of their game appearances. Kritters first appear in Donkey Kong Country, and they sometimes appear in spinoff games of the Super Mario franchise.
Kritters, also named Kremlings, are enemies introduced in Donkey Kong Country. These Kremlings act as the main footsoldiers of the Kremling Krew, led by King K. Rool, and sometimes are representatives of the Kremlings in general. Some walk on the ground while others bounce around. Kritters in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2 have the alias of Klomps, which have peg legs, as well as Kaboings, which move on two peg legs, replacing the bouncing variety. Kritters are replaced in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III with Kobbles, and the jumping variety with Re-Koils.

Kritters have had substitutes in later installments of the Donkey Kong Country series. In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, enemies known as Klomps are Kritters that wear tattered red and white shorts, with each sporting a peg leg. Likewise, a distinct Kremling variety formed by Kaboings, which have two peg legs, replace Donkey Kong Country's jumping Kritters. Compared to the Kritters of the previous game, these varieties have a more upright posture, presumably due to their peg legs. In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III, Kritters were replaced by a different type of Kremling, Kobbles, while jumping Kritters are replaced by Re-Koils.

In Donkey Kong Country, Kritters are one of the most common enemies, along with Gnawties and Zingers. Kritters are one of the weakest enemies, and Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can defeat them with any attack, including throwing a barrel, jumping, rolling, or Donkey Kong's Hand Slap. Aside from the standard green type, Kritters have a few color variations, each with their own distinct pattern of moving and jumping: Green Kritters simply walk in a single direction toward the Kongs; brown Kritters repeatedly jump up in a single spot; blue Kritters jump while moving forward; yellow Kritters jump back and forth in a set path; and gray Kritters hop a few times before performing a high jump, all while moving forward.
Kritters appear in Donkey Kong Country. They are colored green and move left or right only. The brown, blue, and yellow, and gray varieties all jump, particularly without moving, going in a single direction, in a set motion, and performing a few hops before a high jump, respectively. Kritters are defeated from either being stomped, rolled into, being hit by a barrel, or from a Hand Slap. Kritters are purple in the Game Boy Advance remake, but are depicted with their stock artwork for their photograph.

In pre-production, Kritters were intended to be small enemies; their role in the final was seemingly combined with the unused "Klanger," simply described as a "Green Kremling."

An individual Kritter (said to be a "common Kremling who rose through the ranks by being extra-nasty") appears as an antagonist in the final chapter. After the Kongs board the Gangplank Galleon, Donkey Kong throws mini-barrels at Kritter, who shrugs off the attack and taunts Donkey Kong. In response, the gorilla hand slaps the floor, causing Kritter to crash to the lowest deck of the ship.
A Kritter is an antagonist in the last chapter of the Donkey Kong Country novel. Its extra antagonistic nature put it amongst higher ranked members. The Kritter is not affected by the mini-barrels thrown by Donkey Kong on Gangplank Galleon, but crashes to the lowest deck when Donkey Kong slams the wood of the ship, breaking it.

In the novel Donkey Kong Country: Rumble in the Jungle, after Donkey Kong breaks Funky Kong out of his cell, the Kongs are confronted by an individual Kritter who leads a "squadron" of Kremlings. Kritter threatens to put Funky Kong back into his cell, along with his friends. Donkey Kong distracts Kritter and the rest of the Kremlings with a hand slap, and then uses some "masterful monkey maneuvers" to defeat several Kremlings. Kritter and another Kremling grab Cranky Kong, and Kritter says "Stop your assault or the old ape gets it!". However, Cranky says "Who are you calling an old ape, you big green toad?", before elbowing Kritter, and hitting the other Kremling with his cane. The Kongs then continue fighting the Kremlings by throwing barrels, and performing barrel rolls.
A Kritter is an antagonist in Donkey Kong Country: Rumble in the Jungle. He is seen in chapter five, leading a group of Kremlings. Following a threat to incarcerate every Kong, Kritter is distracted by Donkey Kong performing a maneuver that defeats some of the other Kremlings. Kritter and another Kremling grab Cranky Kong, who then elbows Kritter and hits the latter with his cane.

They attack the Kongs by punching and biting them. Like in their previous appearances, Kritters remain one of the weakest enemies. They can be defeated from one hit, just like Gnawties. Kritters appear in every world except Fungi Forest and Creepy Castle, and they also appear at Crocodile Isle. Kritters are also featured in nearly every Battle Arena except for Jungle Japes's and Creepy Castle's.

There is a red variety encountered in Frantic Factory, where they belch in a certain order for Lanky to memorize and replicate for a Golden Bananas, and the minigame Kremling Kosh!, worth two points instead of one like the regular type.

Kritters have an uncommon red variety that appear in the level Frantic Factory and the minigame Kremling Kosh!. In Frantic Factory, Lanky Kong can earn a Golden Banana by memorizing the order that the red Kritters belch. In the Kremling Kosh! minigame, there are numerous green and red Kritters who pop out of a barrel, flail their arms, and then quickly retreat into their barrel. Red Kritters are worth two points while regular Kritters are worth one point. Kritters also appear in three other minigames: Mad Maze Maul!, Stash Snatch! and Busy Barrel Barrage!.

During the boxing match between the Kongs and K. Rool, there are two Kritters who ring the bell to start the match. Both of them are wearing a tuxedo equivalent of the traditional outfit worn by Kritters; some other Kritters attempting to pull off a stadium light from K. Rool's head also wear this outfit. Whenever K. Rool is knocked down between rounds, the count to 10 starts. The Kritters always ring the bell once it reaches 8, by pressing a red button on either side of the bell. One of the Kritters has dim and silly behavior, for instance during one of the countdowns, it is waving the wrong way and only realizes this when the other Kritter rings the bell. After Tiny wins her round, both Kritters slam a button at the same time and accidentally break the bell. As a result, they cannot save K. Rool from losing the match after Chunky beats him.
Kritters are in the boxing arena but cannot be fought. They wear tuxedos. Two are announcers and ring the bell to start the match between the Kongs and K. Rool. Some Kritters latter try to remove a light fixture stuck to K. Rool. In each countdown, Kritters always ring the bell when it counts up to 8, by pressing a red button on either side of the bell. Kritters are goalies in Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged. They were replaced by Boom Booms in Mario Strikers: Battle League. Kritters wear a goalie outfit to reflect this. Kritters are unaffected by attacks except the strongest type, and they knock back player characters on contact. Kritters in Super Mario Strikers can deflect any Super Strikes that are not timed properly, and a Kritter with the ball can pass it; the game adds a robotic Kritter as the goalie of the Super Team. A Kritter is first seen in Mario Strikers Charged during the opening scene, blocking a Toad's Fire Meteor, consequently putting its hands on fire. As shown from the opening movie, Kritters are invulnerable to Skillshots, as well as all Super Abilities except Crystal Smash!, Fire Storm!, and Thunder Wham! (if it has the ball). Kritters in Mario Strikers Charged can kick away players if they either fail a Skillshot or kick too close to the goal. A Kritter can be controlled by the player to block Mega Strikes.
In the Mario Strikers series, Kritters act as the goalies in Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged. As such, they wear a goalie outfit. There is also a robotic Kritter as the goalie of the Super Team. Kritters are immune to most attacks, and they knock any players on contact, but they can be stunned if they block a strong hit.

In Super Mario Strikers, Kritters can deflect Super Strikes if it is improperly timed. If a player attempts a Super Strike near the Kritter, it jumps and kicks the player far. If the Kritter holds the ball, a player can control it by either passing or clearing the ball.

In Mario Strikers Charged, Kritters are vulnerable to Skillshots, as well as most Super Abilities; the exceptions include Fire Storm!, regardless of condition, as well as Crystal Smash! and Thunder Wham! only if he has the ball in his hands. The goalie can kick nearby players away if the players charge the ball too close to the goal or if they fail a Skillshot or trick. Finally, the player can take control of the Kritter to block Mega Strikes. In the game's opening movie, a Kritter on Diddy Kong's team during a match on Thunder Island successfully blocked a Fire Meteor shot from a Toad on Yoshi's team, only to have his hands set on fire.

Kritters do not return as goalies in Mario Strikers: Battle League, being replaced by Boom Booms instead.

Kritter, Mario Super Sluggers

Kritters, also named Kremlings,[1] are enemies introduced in Donkey Kong Country. These Kremlings act as the main footsoldiers of the Kremling Krew, led by King K. Rool, and sometimes are representatives of the Kremlings in general. Some walk on the ground while others bounce around. Kritters in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2 have the alias of Klomps,[2] which have peg legs, as well as Kaboings, which move on two peg legs, replacing the bouncing variety. Kritters are replaced in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III with Kobbles, and the jumping variety with Re-Koils.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Country series[edit]

Donkey Kong Country[edit]

Kritter in Donkey Kong Country.
Artwork from Donkey Kong Country, depicting the first design of a Kritter

Kritters appear in Donkey Kong Country. They are colored green and move left or right only. The brown, blue, and yellow, and gray varieties all jump, particularly without moving, going in a single direction, in a set motion, and performing a few hops before a high jump, respectively. Kritters are defeated from either being stomped, rolled into, being hit by a barrel, or from a Hand Slap. Kritters are purple in the Game Boy Advance remake, but are depicted with their stock artwork for their photograph.

In pre-production, Kritters were intended to be small enemies; their role in the final was seemingly combined with the unused "Klanger," simply described as a "Green Kremling."[3]

Kritters are very common. In the original version, Kritters appear in the following levels, in the following colors:

Donkey Kong Country 3 (Game Boy Advance)[edit]

Main article: Kremling (boater)

Kritter-like enemies appear in the Funky's Rentals challenges in Donkey Kong Country 3. They ride around in black Motor Boats that fire projectiles.

Club Nintendo[edit]

A blue Kritter appears in the Club Nintendo comic "Donkey Kong Country." It is capable of speech, like the other enemies. The Kritter is attacked by Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong in a cave. The Kritter is scared by Donkey Kong's large shadow before a barrel defeats it.

Donkey Kong Country novel[edit]

A Kritter is an antagonist in the last chapter of the Donkey Kong Country novel. Its extra antagonistic nature put it amongst higher ranked members.[4] The Kritter is not affected by the mini-barrels thrown by Donkey Kong on Gangplank Galleon,[5] but crashes to the lowest deck when Donkey Kong slams the wood of the ship, breaking it.

Donkey Kong Country: Rumble in the Jungle[edit]

A Kritter is an antagonist in Donkey Kong Country: Rumble in the Jungle. He is seen in chapter five, leading a group of Kremlings. Following a threat to incarcerate every Kong, Kritter is distracted by Donkey Kong performing a maneuver that defeats some of the other Kremlings.[6] Kritter and another Kremling grab Cranky Kong, who then elbows Kritter and hits the latter with his cane.[7]

Donkey Kong Land[edit]

Kritters are enemies in Donkey Kong Land. They act like the green type from Donkey Kong Country.

Kritters appear in the following levels:

Donkey Kong Country television show[edit]

A Kritter weilding a Klap-Blaster on the Donkey Kong Country television series.
A Kritter as seen on the Donkey Kong Country television series.

Kritters are antagonists in the Donkey Kong Country television series. They are voiced by Lawrence Bayne. Kritters have their design from Donkey Kong Country, but their eyes are not connected and their tails are shorter. Many Kritters carry Klap-Blasters, which shoot miniature Klaptraps. Green Kroc, a minion of Kaptain Skurvy, is a Kritter.

Diddy Kong Racing / Diddy Kong Racing DS[edit]

A Kritter named Krunch appears in Diddy Kong Racing as the game's heavyweight racer, being the first time any Kritter is playable. A regular Kritter appears in the intro of the remake, spying on the Kongs with Krunch.

Donkey Kong 64[edit]

Artwork of Kritter for Donkey Kong 64
Artwork from Donkey Kong 64

Kritters are enemies in Donkey Kong 64. They are encountered at Crocodile Isle, all worlds barring Fungi Forest and Creepy Castle, most Battle Arenas except for Jungle Japes's and Creepy Castle's, the minigames Kremling Kosh!, Mad Maze Maul!, Stash Snatch!, and Busy Barrel Barrage!. There is a red variety encountered in Frantic Factory, where they belch in a certain order for Lanky to memorize and replicate for a Golden Bananas, and the minigame Kremling Kosh!, worth two points instead of one like the regular type.

Both Kritters slam a button at the same time, breaking it accidentally, after Tiny's round concludes.

Mario Power Tennis[edit]

Kritters are a species in Mario Power Tennis. They appear in green, blue, and red varieties, using their design from Donkey Kong 64, but with visible teeth. They are spectators in DK Jungle Court.

DK series[edit]

DK: King of Swing[edit]

Kremlings are enemies and an unlockable playable character of Jungle Jam mode in DK: King of Swing. They are encountered in Contraption Cave, Puzzling Pyramid, Treacherous Twister, Kremling Kamp, Ice Castle, and K. Kruizer III Hull/ Kremlings move around pegs, throwing any nearby rocks or bombs. A Kremling can be unlocked by obtaining six gold medals. Kremling has balanced stats, shared with Donkey Kong's.

DK: Jungle Climber[edit]

Kremlings are enemies in DK: Jungle Climber. They are similar as in DK: King of Swing.

Kritters appear in the following levels:

Mario Strikers series[edit]

An armored Kritter seen in Mario Strikers Charged.

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast[edit]

A Kritter is a playable character in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. Kritter's stats include balanced top speed, boost and agility, shared with his direct rival, Donkey Kong. Kritter's bongos are gray with a skull printed on the sides and spiked bands on the top and bottom. Kritter attacks other racers by swinging his tail around. If Kritter gets in 3rd or 2nd place after completing a cup, he sits and looks down, disappointed. If he places 1st, he sits down and laughs. Kritter can be seen in the Single Race cutscene along with Klump, Kalypso and Kass, standing in front of their respective rivals, Donkey Kong, Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong and Dixie Kong. In the Jungle Grand Prix cutscene, Kritter is seen catching up to Donkey Kong during a race, before both of them get surprised when Diddy Kong passes them.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

SmashWiki article: Kritter
A Kritter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
Screenshot from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Kritters are only represented as trophies and two stickers in the former game. The first sticker, featuring artwork from DK: King of Swing, boosts launch resistance by 13, while the second sticker, featuring artwork from Mario Strikers Charged, boosts the power of direct special moves by 28. Both stickers can be used by any character.

Green and blue Kritters appear as enemies in the Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Green ones bite three times in a row, while blue ones spin around furiously with their claws.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Kritter from Donkey Kong Barrel Blast appears as a Novice-class Grab-type primary spirit with one support slot. When used on a fighter, the spirit boosts only their power without granting any special effect. In World of Light, the spirit is found on the DK Island sub-map of the Light Realm, occupying the spot where Ropey Rampage is located in Donkey Kong Country. The spirit's puppet fighter is King K. Rool, fought on the Kongo Jungle stage.

Mario Super Sluggers[edit]

Kritters are playable characters in Mario Super Sluggers. Green Kritter is the default color, with blue, red, and brown varieties appearing as alternate colors. All four Kritter colors are Power characters with batting and fielding at above average and running below average. The blue Kritter has a weaker batting stat to improve its pitching, and vice versa for red Kritter. The brown Kritter is the fastest of the four Kritter colors, but like the red Kritter, its pitching is weaker than the default green Kritter's. Every Kritter bats with their left hand and fields with their right hand. The sweetspot is the spike on the center of the mace. Their signature ability, Keeper Catch, grants them more reach while fielding. When they bat, they use a short, but broad spiked mace. They have good chemistry with King K. Rool, but incompatible chemistry with any of the Kongs, even though they are members of the DK Wilds.

The Kritters, Wario, and Waluigi are tied with having the lowest amount of good chemistry in Mario Super Sluggers, with them having good chemistry with only Miis of their color and one other character (with that character in their case being King K. Rool).

Unused appearances[edit]

Diddy Kong Pilot[edit]

Model of Krunch from the 2001 Diddy Kong Pilot
Krunch model from the cancelled Diddy Kong Pilot (2001)

Two different canceled games named Diddy Kong Pilot, one from 2001 and one from 2003, would have included a Kritter with a leather jacket as a playable character. Although this character is simply called "Kritter" in the 2003 build, the model bears a strong resemblance to Krunch from Diddy Kong Racing; in the 2001 build, the internal name for the character when highlighted on the selection screen is Krunch's early name "Krash",[8] while the internal HUDMedia:DKP 2001 Hud.png uses the name "Krunch". Kritter has a Southern American English accent in the 2003 iteration. When it became Banjo-Pilot, Kritter was replaced with Jolly Roger, with the two characters sharing similar stats.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Kritters are most commonly colored green while still having several color varieties. Kritters originally had gold shoulder pads, knee pads and a bluish-green skin tone, though various other color variations appeared too, such as purple and burgundy. In Donkey Kong 64, they have a bright green skin tone and are slightly less muscular. Kritters wear a sleeveless leather jacket with a skull-and-crossbones on the back (similar to Krunch from Diddy Kong Racing) and a belt with a skull-and-crossbones buckle. This appearance is reused in Mario Power Tennis and is similar to their Super Mario Strikers appearance.

Starting with DK: King of Swing, Kritters received another redesign. They are significantly more muscular, especially in their chest and arms, and have a rounder snout and head. Their redesign also includes tattered tan pants and spiked wristbands. They still retain their skull belt from Donkey Kong 64.

Originally, Kritter's trophy stated that its other appearance is Donkey Kong 64, but this was removed from Western releases.

Kritter's goalie trophy says that they are the only goalies in Super Mario Strikers. This is not true, as the Super Team uses a Robo-Kritter as their goalie in that game. In Mario Strikers Charged, however, they are the only available goalkeepers.
