Not to be confused with Poison Gas or smoke.

Poison fog,[1] also known as ash,[2] appears in the Super Mario franchise as an obstacle normally taking on the appearance of an enormous red-and-black cloud. It travels to the right very slowly. Its purpose is likely based on volcanic ash.

History[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

A preview of World 8-1, from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Ash in World 8-1 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Ash first appears in the Super Mario franchise in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It appears in World 8-1 only. Ash makes the player lose a life instantly upon being touched. However, neither the volcanic debris nor the Buzzy Beetles are affected by it.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U[edit]

Ash appears as an obstacle in New Super Mario Bros. U. It is located in Magma-River Cruise, where it behaves the same way. It also appears in the challenge Mole to Goal Returns and in New Super Luigi U's Magmaw River Cruise.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Poison Fog
Poison fog in Trick Trap Tower

Poison fog appears as an obstacle in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Instead of moving right, it moves down. It also appears to generate electricity in this game. Like in past appearances, it will make the player lose a life if they touch it, regardless of whether or not they have a power-up. It appears only in Trick Trap Tower, where once it reaches the bottom, it sinks into the lava, causing it to rise. It appears when the Key Coin at the top of the tower is collected.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, poison fog appears in King Olly's third phase; here, if Mario takes too long to unshuffle the Magic Circle, that would result in a Game Over.
