- —Rango, Super Mario Odyssey
Rango is a tall and lanky member of the Broodals introduced in Super Mario Odyssey. Rango wears orange pants, a white button shirt, red bow tie, and indigo suspenders, as well as a yellow hat. This hat can reveal blades on the ends, and has a flower on the underside. The hat serves as a boomerang weapon, which happens to be what Rango's name is based upon. He acts as the group's bouncer. He is characterized as not being smart. Like the other members of the Broodals, he works under Madame Broode, and they all come from the Moon.
Concept and creation[edit]
Rango was designed tall enough that the player could enjoy using the "cap" as a trampoline to hit him.[1]
History[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Rango is first encountered and fought in the Lake Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey, during the objective "Broodals Over the Lake". He tells Mario that he and the other Broodals have the Lochlady Dress. Before the battle, Rango's hat grows an additional spike on the top, so he cannot be jumped on normally. Additionally, Rango is too tall to hit with a normal jump. Rango tries to stay a certain distance from Mario, so he backs away if Mario gets closer. He attacks by throwing his hat like a boomerang, which stops when it reaches Mario's former position, then returns. The blades extend during the throw, resembling a Grinder. Rango will not move while his hat is out. Mario can throw Cappy at Rango's hat to flip it over, preventing it from moving and revealing the flower on the bottom side. Hitting it more than once keeps it in place. This flower functions as a Hat Trampoline, allowing Mario to bounce off with a Spin Jump, then drift back down to easily land on Rango. If Mario uses Rango's hat, he gets so high that Rango is unable to see him. Rango does his best to look for Mario, but does not look up, keeping him in place until Mario lowers back into his eyesight. If the hat is left alone for long enough, it will return to Rango. It can still be hit to temporarily stop it.
Once stomped, Rango withdraws halfway into his hat and repeatedly hops in pursuit of Mario while spinning the blades. His hat does not have a spiked top in this phase, so Mario can stomp on Rango to end this attack early. Since Rango is partially inside the hat, he is shorter and easier to hit. It ends on its own after a while, and either way Rango resumes his hat-throwing pattern.
Rango is defeated after being hit in the hat throwing phase three times. For the second hit, he instead throws the hat in a wide loop, moving clockwise at one of different speeds. For the third hit, Rango can use both the loop throw and the forward throw, alternating with each attack.
He is fought again in the Snow Kingdom, during the mission "The Cake Thief's Parting Gift". He says that he has taken the Frost-Frosted Cake and believes it will please Bowser. In this fight, he throws two hats instead of one and the arena is icy. Rango is also found as one of RoboBrood's pilots in Bowser's Kingdom.
Rango is encountered for the final time at Dark Side. He expresses his anger at Mario for stopping Bowser's wedding, as no one will hire the Broodals anymore due to their failure. The fight is the same as the previous one, but because of the lighter gravity in the Moon Kingdom, Rango's hops while within the hat go higher and further than usual. It also lets Mario jump on him without Cappy. Rango once again pilots RoboBrood during its second fight at Dark Side.
Rango is the only member of the Broodals who does not need to be fought before defeating Bowser at least once.
As of June 27, 2018, the player can purchase a costume at the Crazy Cap shop based on Rango.
Minecraft[edit]
Rango also appears in the Super Mario Mash-up of Minecraft, replacing Pillagers. He is the only member of the Broodals to appear in the game.
Dark Side brochure information[edit]
Rango, the Bouncer
Best hat-handler on the team.
He's not the most focused, but Rango is a valuable player on the Broodals team, always coming through in the end. A master of his boomeranging trampoline hat, he can throw it both straight and curved with almost unnatural control over the way it flies. On the other hand, he sometimes zones out a bit and looks confused. That's your chance to counterattack!

Trivia[edit]
- When hiding under his hat, Rango greatly resembles both a Spiky Topman and Topmaniac.
- Based on some of his speech mannerisms (e.g. pronouncing "you're" as "yer") and "hyuk" laugh, he seems to speak with a Southern drawl, similar to Disney's cartoon character Goofy. His droopy ears and jowls also resemble Goofy's.
- Rango is the only one of the Broodals to appear outside Super Mario Odyssey, as he appears as a Pillager re-skin in the Minecraft Super Mario Mash-up.
