|Really fun like any of the M&L games, albeit easy to cheese since the babies make it so that you can't really lose everyone on the same turn, so you can just 1-up Mushroom through it all. I also felt like this game was too structured, if that makes any sense. (Do some stuff, mid-boss, do a dungeon, boss, repeat 5 times.) Enjoyable regardless.

|I LOVE that this game exists at all. Honestly a great tool to introduce kids to the concept of game development. I kinda wish that it wasn't touch controls only, but I guess limitations had to exist somewhere. They can't overwhelm the players after all. |Fun fact: There was a time when this was my all-time favorite Mario series game. I played this with my siblings all the time, and many an inside joke spawned from it. I even made a board game inspired by it then - I still have it today. I don't like the game nearly as much now, however. The sort of jankiness it has is a bit too prevalent. |I remember when this was first announced, that may have been the most hyped I've ever been for a game. Nowadays... it's kinda painful to look back on? Mario Maker 2 dwarfs it in pretty much every category. It's still great, but... I don't want to pick it up anymore. Also, can we talk about how dumb the part-unlocking was? That made it so that like 90% of levels you played were in SMB1 or NSMBU ground with basic parts and elements - because the first thing you're going to do is try to upload a level, but you don't have any of the good stuff, but most people will obviously want to upload anyway! That was actually so frustrating.

*Wario Land: Shake It! - ^
*Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - The only M&L pre-Brothership that I missed out on (other than OG SS and BIS DX but honestly I don't care since I played the other version of both).
*Mario Tennis Aces - Actually looks kinda sick at a glance. I wonder if I'll think that as I'm playing it.
*Super Mario Bros. Wonder - It's mainline, I've got to someday! Clearly.
*3D World + Bowser's Fury - Looks like an objectively better port to me, I really want to give it a shot mostly because of Bowser's Fury.

The "SPEEDRUN!" stamp from Super Mario Maker 2.

A beautiful excerpt from the DK Fandom Wiki

(I might have to refer to Trivia points literally no one asked for as "fourth most damaged tikis". This is golden. How do you even quantify "fourth most damaged"???)

Hey, this is ViableBunnyBudd, or just "Viable" for short. I like Mario games, which is why I'm here. Crazy, right? I love watching people play games well, and I love attempting to mimic that sometimes.

I'm the guy that makes the Hint Art for the Shroom. I'm having a lot of fun with that so far, and from what I can gather other people like it too, which makes me happy.

Let me know if I'm doing anything wrong with my wiki edits btw.

My sandbox for some things

Mario games I've played (plus opinions!)

NOTE: Most of the older games weren't played on their original consoles, I played them on WiiVC or NSO. I don't use the savestate or rewind features though because I think they draw away from the "intended experience".

Game Cover Game Name Overview of my dumb opinions
In-game title of the Nintendo Entertainment System port of Donkey Kong Donkey Kong (NES) Don't really care
In-game title of Donkey Kong Jr. Donkey Kong Jr. (NES) Don't really care
In-game title of the NES port of Mario Bros. Mario Bros. (NES) I care slightly more
North American box art for Donkey Kong Jr. Math Donkey Kong Jr. Math (NES) Huh???
Wrecking Crew NES cover Wrecking Crew (NES) I like this one! The whole level-making thing is pretty great, even if it's hard to adjust to because... it's on the NES.
United States box art for Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. (NES) It's good, but I'd rather play just about anything else.
Japanese box art for Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels ("NES") I don't like it much... but I'll do the whole "play the game eight times" thing eventually just to say I did it. I have beat this game without powerups, warp zones, and savestates before. (It took a few Game Overs though, thank goodness you can restart from the world you died at rather than square one)
North American box art for Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) Good
North American box art for Super Mario Bros. 3 Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) Very good
North American box art for Dr. Mario on NES Dr. Mario (NES) I like it. Still have yet to do Level 20 on high though. I'm not too good at the falling-block genre.
North American box art for Yoshi on the Nintendo Entertainment System Yoshi (NES) Don't care. This one's boring.
North American box art of Wario's Woods for the Nintendo Entertainment System Wario's Woods (NES) I like it but the lack of music diversity gets to me... really interesting take on the falling-block genre though. It's fun.
North American box art for Super Mario Land Super Mario Land (GB) It's nothing particularly exciting.
North American box art for Dr. Mario on Game Boy Dr. Mario (GB) Imagine the NES version, but a little worse.
North American box art for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins Super Mario Land 2 (GB) It has a nice vibe to it. The open-endedness is a neat idea. There are a bunch of design choices I don't understand with this one, mostly level-specific things... it's like Little Timmy hacked in and changed some of the layouts.
North American box art for Super Mario World Super Mario World (SNES) On par with Mario 3. Very clean. My number one nitpick would be that the Cape Feather is probably a bit overpowered. It's generally a great time to romp around here and find secrets.
Super Mario Kart North American box art Super Mario Kart (SNES) Now, I don't really rage at games, but this game reeeeally pushes my limits... I will say this though: I love watching people who are good at this game. The live competitions are fun to watch and I'd recommend seeing some.
North American box art for Super Mario All-Stars Super Mario All-Stars (SNES) I think it's generally better for the first three games but worse for Mario 3.
North American box art for Donkey Kong Country Donkey Kong Country (SNES) It has a sort of vibe that I can't really describe... it's like the game just feels dated. There's also a LOT of times where you'll get blindsided by stuff you couldn't react to, almost like the devs didn't know where the camera would be when designing the levels. Can't say I enjoyed it. I will say that it's another game where I enjoy watching people that care about it play.
North American box art of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES) I finally 100% this one, and... eh. Way too many mazelike levels; it honestly feels like the devs were trying to make some of these unfun (The Very Loooooong Cave, anyone?). While I did find the secret collecting enjoyable enough I can confidently say that the game doesn't value your time; you have to get everything in one go for... some reason?
Box art for Mario's Super Picross Mario's Super Picross (SNES) I've been picking away at this one. All I can say is this: It sure is Picross.
North American box art for Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) Oh my god this one is so much better than the first game. 100%-ing this was a great time.
North American box art for Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) The way this game feels is so... unique. The wilderness vibes(?) are really strong, and it's oddly captivating to me. In between DKCs 1 and 2 imo.
Box art of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online version of Wrecking Crew '98. This version replaces the registered trademark symbols (®) in the game logo and Super Famicom logo with trademark symbols (™) Wrecking Crew '98 (SNES) It feels a little scuffed to me. The matches can take a really long time and it never really feels like I'm making any meaningful progress. Not a huge fan.
North American box art of Super Mario 64. Super Mario 64 (N64 (wow)) Some aspects of it are kinda painful (cough cough Dire Dire Docks, Aquarium, camera in general) but I appreciate the vast majority of this game. It's great for just messing around if you feel like it. I keep coming back to this one and find it good for all sorts of challenge runs.
North American box art for Paper Mario Paper Mario (N64) Great role-playing game. I love the dialogue and the interconnectedness of it. I remember finding this game hard as a kid, though when revisiting it I was like "How did I ever struggle with this lol"
North American box art for Mario Golf on Game Boy Color Mario Golf (GBC) When I first played this, I was expecting this to be a lame-o potato. But honestly? I was surprised with how much enjoyment I got from this. I rate it "pretty good"/10.
North American box art for Wario Land 3 Wario Land 3 (GBC) I kind of love it and hate it at the same time. It has some interesting moments, and also some moments that feel like they were made specifically to annoy you. The golf stuff gets a little old by the end. I'd say it's a mostly positive experience though.
North American box art for WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! (GBA) It definitely feels like a "first in the series" game, but it's still really fun. I don't know if you can go wrong with a format like this.
North American box art for Super Mario Sunshine. Super Mario Sunshine (GC) This is one of those "beautiful mess" games. Would I call this game good? God no, but I enjoy it nonetheless. I really appreciate what this game tries to do, even if it sometimes didn't work. The whole connected setting of Isle Delfino was a good idea.
MarioLuigiPartnersTimeBox.jpg Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS) Really fun like any of the M&L games, albeit easy to cheese since the babies make it so that you can't really lose everyone on the same turn, so you can just 1-up Mushroom through it all. I also felt like this game was too structured, if that makes any sense. (Do some stuff, mid-boss, do a dungeon, boss, repeat 5 times.) Enjoyable regardless.
Box art of New Super Mario Bros. New Super Mario Bros. (DS) Very good/10
North American box art for Mario Party DS Mario Party DS (take a wild guess) Great Mario Party, it only gets overlooked because it doesn't have a number attached to it. (That's what it feels like anyway...) I really like the tiny theme they did with this one, it's cute.
The North American cover of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS) Probably one of my favorite games with "Mario" in the title. The only parts I would pick on would be finicky microphone moments. That and a few QOL features present in later titles but not this one.
North American cover of the Nintendo DS video game, WarioWare: D.I.Y. WarioWare: D.I.Y. (DS) I LOVE that this game exists at all. Honestly a great tool to introduce kids to the concept of game development. I kinda wish that it wasn't touch controls only, but I guess limitations had to exist somewhere. They can't overwhelm the players after all. It does also hinge on you being a creative person, because if not, uh... there's not much else to do.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! Boxart. Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem (DS) It's a good puzzle game with a great level editor to boot.
Super Paper Mario North American cover art Super Paper Mario (Wii) I liked it when I first played it, but that was a long time ago. I may need to replay it sometime, though I don't own it anymore. I distinctly remember the last time I played it, I lost to Shadoo in the Flopside Pit and gave up right then and there lmao
Boxart for Super Mario Galaxy. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) Possibly my favorite game with Mario in the name. The sense of atmosphere is unmatched, and I love what they did with the motion stuff. Spinning alone is super satisfying.
Mkwii.jpg Mario Kart Wii (gee I wonder) This one's great fun, though y'all should stop saying it's better than 8 Deluxe, you got that?!??!
NSMBW NA Box Art.jpg New Super Mario Bros. Wii (hmmmmmm) I do really like this game, honestly one of the better 2D Marios imo. Levels are solid and multiplayer is hilarious.
Boxart for Super Mario Galaxy 2. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) I used to like this one more than the first game, but not so much anymore. There was a point in time when I modded this game, but I never released anything and the things I did all sucked anyway.
Offical American boxart of Donkey Kong Country Returns. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) Super solid 2D platformer that's still really fun to complete. My biggest gripe is that a lot of the levels fall into the "Good level #10000" category, if you know what I mean by that.
The North American cover for Super Mario 3D Land Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) The "Nice!" stamp from Super Mario Maker 2.
Box art for the game, Mario Kart 7. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) Some questionable choices were made (Waluigi??? VS Mode???), but I still like it. It's the game where my favorite course comes from so that clearly means it has to be good. derrr
North American boxart for Mario Tennis Open Mario Tennis Open (3DS) Yeah, it's tennis. Fun until it's tiring. I remember when this game was still "relevant", I only found a grand total of one person to play against online. Whoop-de-do.
The front North American cover art for New Super Mario Bros. 2 New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) Mmmmmmm... nah. I find that the coin gimmick adds barely any value, and a good chunk of the content isn't very interesting. ALSO WHY ARE LIKE HALF THE LEVELS THE BAD KIND OF AUTOSCROLLERS - WHO OKAYED THAT???
Paper Mario: Sticker Star North America box art. Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) On the one hand, I am willing to say that this one gets more hate than is deserved, on the other hand, it's still definitely in the bottom 25% of Mario games lmao
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon North American box art Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) Fun fact: There was a time when this was my all-time favorite Mario series game. I played this with my siblings all the time, and many an inside joke spawned from it. I even made a board game inspired by it then - I still have it today. I don't like the game nearly as much now, however. The sort of jankiness it has is a bit too prevalent. The cutscenes are still great though.
North America box art of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) Another contender for one of my favorites! Big fan of the world and combat in this one. It feels very inspired.
Final box art of Mario Party: Island Tour. Mario Party: Island Tour (3DS) The only reason this game ever gets brought up is because of a certain special minigame... and probably for a good reason? Most of the boards are lame-o potatoes. I do think a lot of the other minigames are pretty good, though there is a lack of variety in structure. (No team minigames? Really? And four luck minigames? Is that necessary?)
North American box art for Mario Party: Star Rush with a red box Mario Party: Star Rush (3DS) I'm willing to bet that I have more hours in this game than any user on this site - I've played a whole lot of it. I checked the records submitted to Cyberscore and I've actually beat like half of them LMAO. I like the ideas the game brings, even if they could've used some more fleshing out.
North American box art of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (3DS) Super good. I remember I originally wanted this game specifically for the new side mode - a little silly thinking back. I probably enjoyed that mode a lot more than most, there's something about it that I can't put into words...
Box art for Mario Party: The Top 100 Mario Party: The Top 100 (3DS) WOW this one blows. Like, actually. Possibly my least favorite modern-era game. Whar be the boards??? The multiplayer doesn't even work which is so weird since Star Rush's had no issues.
North American cover for WarioWare Gold. WarioWare Gold (3DS) Love it! The fast-paced nature of these games is always entertaining. Also, whoever thought of letting us dub the cutscenes is a genius, god that's so funny.
Cover art for Luigi's Mansion on the Nintendo 3DS. Luigi's Mansion (3DS) I can't say I liked it very much. It's so short and doesn't go very far with its ideas imo. Possibly my biggest "hot take" on the entire list?
New Super Mario Bros. U North American box cover New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U) I do like it, though there are many level-specific decisions that irk me... some parts just feel like there wasn't much thought put into them. I love the overworld this game has though!
Final North American box art for New Super Luigi U New Super Luigi U (Wii U) It's a neat concept, there's some good ideas, a lot of parts feel needlessly spammy.
North American box art of Super Mario 3D World Super Mario 3D World (Wii U) It's so good, though I really want to try the Switch port since it looks even better there.
North American box art for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) Another contender for favorite! It's so polished, the levels are so memorable, and I found Hard Mode to be a blast.
North American box art of Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) It's really good but why not just play Deluxe lmao
Final North American boxart for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U) Might honestly be the most fun I've had with a game that's too easy for my skill level. It's really charming, and something about the way the levels are made just makes my brain happy.
North American cover art of Mario Party 10. Mario Party 10 (Wii U) I feel like I want to like it more than I actually do, but there's still fun to be had. Some minigames are "bangers", as the cringe kids say.
Super Mario Maker box art Super Mario Maker (Wii U) I remember when this was first announced, that may have been the most hyped I've ever been for a game. Nowadays... it's kinda painful to look back on? Mario Maker 2 dwarfs it in pretty much every category. It's still great, but... I don't want to pick it up anymore. Also, can we talk about how dumb the part-unlocking was? That made it so that like 90% of levels you played were in SMB1 or NSMBU ground with basic parts and elements - because the first thing you're going to do is try to upload a level, but you don't have any of the good stuff, but most people will obviously want to upload anyway! That was actually so frustrating.
Boxart for Wii U Version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U) It's a harmless minigame collection that honestly doesn't have much replay value in it. (Or regular value, to be frank.)
North American boxart of Paper Mario: Color Splash. Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U) Easily one of the funniest Mario games imo. Many great jokes. Shame that the combat is genuinely worse than Sticker Star's if you're asking me. How much damage am I doing? How much health do they have? No one knows, so god forbid you ever wanted to strategize!
North American box art of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) Easily my favorite of the Karters, and one of my favorite games in general. There's a lot of content, I love the customization, and the mechanics can be way more in-depth than you'd think.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle NTSC/PAL boxart Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (Switch) I think it's pretty fun, and it can be hard to master initially. The big problem comes from its performance - it's really buggy and it can sometimes crash on you. If you don't get the bugs then it's honestly great.
Super Mario Odyssey - final box art Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) The movement is awesome and it has many great ideas. Unfortunately, I think there are a few too many moons that are completely pointless, with no platforming or exploration needed for them... so why do they exist?
Boxart for Super Mario Party. Super Mario Party (Switch) The single-joycon thing is really weird - surely they could have made other controllers work? I think the gameplay itself is really fun. That's about it.
New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe boxart New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch) Imagine the Wii U soups if they were just worse. Some baffling decisions here like the whole "one player needs to be an easy mode character in a four player game" thing.
Super Mario Maker 2 boxart Super Mario Maker 2 (Switch) Easily one of my favorites. There's so much you can do and I love it. My biggest complaint is that the online servers are extremely questionable, uuuuugh it's soooo laggy most of the time.
The front cover of Luigi's Mansion 3 Luigi's Mansion 3 (Switch) I think it's a really good game, you can tell there was a lot of polish put into it. Everything feels really satisfying. Still have yet to 100% this one.
North American box-art for Super Mario 3D All-Stars Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch) Three of the 3D games all in a bundle. Of course it's gonna be good.
Logo of Super Mario Bros. 35 Super Mario Bros. 35 (Switch) I thought it was a super fun idea, and I'm not sure why they discontinued it. I managed to get two wins in the small amount of time I was able to play it.
North American box art for WarioWare: Get It Together! WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switch) It's perfectly fine. I think a lot of the microgames felt oversimplified so they could accommodate all of the characters, so I found it maybe a little more boring than some other WarioWares.
Box art for the North American version of Mario Party Superstars Mario Party Superstars (Switch) Infinitely better than Top 100. Really good Mario Party overall, though a single player Minigame Island sort of thing would've been nice.

Games I haven't played but want to

  • Mario Party 3 - I haven't played any of the numbered parties from 1-9, but I've watched a LOT of videos about them all. 3 looks like the one I'd love the most, so I really want to try it eventually.
  • Mario Kart: Double Dash! - Seems like one I'd have to play for myself.
  • Wario Land: Shake It! - ^
  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - The only M&L pre-Brothership that I missed out on (other than OG SS and BIS DX but honestly I don't care since I played the other version of both).
  • Mario Tennis Aces - Actually looks kinda sick at a glance. I wonder if I'll think that as I'm playing it.
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder - It's mainline, I've got to someday! Clearly.
  • 3D World + Bowser's Fury - Looks like an objectively better port to me, I really want to give it a shot mostly because of Bowser's Fury.

Q&A

If you want to ask me something I might put it here.

So beautiful...

A list of articles that I created or majorly rewrote:

Long-term Mario goals that have nothing to do with the Mariowiki

I'd like to complete a speedrun of every (or at least every mainline) Mario game. Maybe even multiple categories of those games.

Speedrun times I have

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii Any% - 26:57
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 Any% - 3:46:54 (I did one run on a whim and that's what I got)
  • Wario Land 3 Any% Glitchless - 2:10:00 (Another "on a whim" run)
  • Paper Mario 3D Land Any% (fangame) - 17:36 (current WR)
  • Various levels in Super Mario Maker 2 - I'll optimize some really good levels that I come across.
  • Various ILs in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - I played a lot on the Wii U version, and the leaderboards are no longer accessible... I had a top 3 time for one level when they shut down haha
  • Various ILs in New Super Mario Bros U. Deluxe - some of them are WR's, mostly due to lack of interest though
  • Various categories in Wario DESTROYS a Glass of Milk (fangame) - currently have 3 WR's in it

I would like to do some more but my problem right now is that I don't have a good way of recording anything that isn't a fangame.

Mario characters I like for no particular reason
