Special 8-Crown is the final level of Special 8 and is the 96th and final level in Super Mario 3D Land. It contains no Star Medals. It is only unlocked after obtaining 5 stars on the save file, and is designed to be the most difficult level in the game, similar to the Grandmaster Galaxy, Champion's Road, Darker Side, and The Final-Final Test Badge Marathon.
Layout[edit]
The player starts off on a platform next to some Toads, Hammer Bros., and Boomerang Bros. At the end of the platforms is a Warp Box that leads to an area that contains several platforms along with some Goombas and several other enemies. At the end of this section is a Warp Pipe that leads to a boss fight with Boom Boom and Pom Pom (with Pom Pom's boss theme used). After the player defeats them, a Warp Pipe appears.
In the next area is a Switchboard that goes past some Fuzzies, some Tail Bob-ombs, and some Fire Bars before leading to a Warp Box. In the next area are several Donut Lifts and Fire Bars with a Warp Box at the end. In the next segment is a Big Cosmic Clone, some Burners, and some Chain Chomps with two Wallops guarding the Warp Box.
In the next area is a switch that activates some Flip Panels, which spell out "THANK YOU!!" and then lead to a Warp Box that goes to the final area with the Goal Pole.
Prima Official Game Guide description[edit]
- "You've done it all: completed every level as Mario and Luigi, collected every Star Medal, and reached the very top of every Goal Pole. Surely with all of that playtime you can easily finish this new level you've unlocked, right? Well you are in for a surprise. This level is by far the most difficult in Super Mario 3D Land. It will take longer to complete than any other level and has no checkpoints or power-ups. In the following pages, we will assist you in conquering this truly challenging level by showing you what lies ahead, recommended jumps, and what not to do. Even with all of our tips, this level will take quite a few attempts; the timing for some of the jumps required has to be precise. Good luck, have fun, and remember that this level wasn't meant to be conquered on the first try!"

Trivia[edit]
- Upon starting this level, Mario and Luigi say, "Here we go!" instead of the usual "Let's-a go!"
- When the level is unlocked, the background music of Special 8 adds extra bass and the position of the level itself replaces the pipe between World 8 and Special 8.
