Yoob is first seen after discovering a group of Yoshis still hiding on Yoshi's Island. He quickly eats all of them, including Yoshi and Kylie Koopa, although Kylie is quickly spat out. Yoob then leaves the area, though he is later seen eating Kamek after the quartet find him on the island. After the adult and baby Mario Bros. beat Kamek and they corner Baby Bowser at the cliff, Yoob climbs to where they are, and two Shroob saucers appear and enlarge him. Yoob then proceeds to eat Baby Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.

Once inside Yoob's Belly, the group (sans Baby Bowser) helps some of the previously swallowed Yoshis move forward in Yoob's stomach by pushing a Chomp Rock, which clears a path that lets them walk through Yoob's intestines. They then discover that part of Yoob's belly is a factory for trapping Yoshis. The factory, maintained by RC Shroobers, stores Yoshis in eggs, then places them on a conveyor belt that takes them to Sunnycide. Toadbert tells them that Sunnycide is guarding the exit, and they go to confront it at the end of Yoob's belly. Sunnycide uses the eggs in battle, and likewise, the heroes can free the Yoshis by breaking the eggs. Eventually, they defeat Sunnycide, and everyone, including the Yoshis, Toadbert, and Baby Bowser, escapes Yoob through the digestive tract, while Yoob stops functioning altogether.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Although Yoob's first cutscene where he spits out both Kylie Koopa and Kamek seems to imply that he does not like Koopas and only intends to eat the Yoshis, this is contradicted a few times afterward. He has no issue eating Baby Bowser and the Mario Bros. after turning giant, and the Dry Bones that are found in his belly imply that he did in fact eat some Koopa Troopas off-screen. There are also various bones, including ribcages, scattered on the floor, as well as much larger bones and skulls surrounding doorways in his belly, suggesting he ate other creatures off-screen as well.
Although not explicitly shown, during battles with Fawful Guys, one of their attacks involves an offscreen creature with a Yoob-esque tongue and roar licking and swallowing the Fawful Guy before a cursor ala Yoshi's Island aims and throws an green Yoshi egg containing the Fawful Guy, which Mario and Luigi can avoid by jumping on and breaking it (similar to Sunnycide's attack). Considering that Bowser had came upon and recovered three Shroob survivors (either during his time at Thwomp Volcano or three that managed to get through a Time Hole to the present), which he then had cryogenically frozen within a cold storage chamber beneath Bowser's Castle, which Mario and Luigi can access with a secret code and free the three Shroobs as an optional boss, it's likely that Bowser managed to obtain a Yoob Egg (presumably one Baby Bowser had stolen from Yoshi's Island after escaping Yoob's Belly), presumably gifting it to Bowser), and either hatched into a second Yoob who might have wandered the exterior of Bowser's Castle as a guard or Fawful had gotten it from the cold storage chamber and allowed it to hatch for the same purpose (likely Fawfulizing it).

In the Super Mario-kun, Yoob appears in volume 36. Unlike in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Yoob originally was just a giant, carefree, friendly Yoshi who is gluttonous. He is used as a vessel for Sunnycide, as Sunnycide takes control of the giant Yoshi and turns him into a Yoob. After the brothers get eaten, they defeat Sunnycide inside, which reverts the Yoob to his normal state. The giant Yoshi then eats the Cobalt Star Shards, which causes the brothers to panic, and ends the chapter. They manage to get the shards out of him.

Yoob is a giant Yoshi-like creature created by the Shroobs that appears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. The creature starts out as a large magenta and green egg on Yoshi's Island, where it becomes an attraction that tourists can see for five coins. When Yoob hatches from the egg, he begins to eat all of the Yoshis in the surrounding village. His name is a pun on "Yoshi" and "Shroob." Although Mario and Luigi encounter Yoob several times during their trek on Yoshi's Island, they cannot fight him directly.

History[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

Yoob attacking Yoshi's Island
Yoob appears in the Yoshi village.

Yoob is first seen in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time after he discovers a group of Yoshis still hiding from him on Yoshi's Island. He quickly eats all of them when they try to run away, including Yoshi and Kylie Koopa, although Kylie is quickly spat out. Yoob then leaves the area, though he is later seen eating and spitting out Kamek after the quartet find him on the island. After the adult and baby Mario Bros. defeat Kamek and corner Baby Bowser at the cliff, Yoob climbs to where they are, and two Shroob saucers appear and enlarge him. Yoob then proceeds to eat Baby Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.

Once inside Yoob's Belly, the group (except Baby Bowser) helps some of the previously swallowed Yoshis move forward in Yoob's stomach by pushing a Chomp Rock, which clears a path that lets them walk through Yoob's intestines. They then discover that part of Yoob's Belly is a factory for trapping Yoshis. The factory, maintained by RC Shroobers, stores Yoshis in eggs, then places them on a conveyor belt that takes them to Sunnycide. The group helps the Yoshis push the Chomp Rock away, then find Toadbert, who has forgotten everything that happened after he traveled back in time, but is still taking care of some trapped Yoshis. Toadbert tells them that Sunnycide is guarding the exit, and they go to confront it. Sunnycide uses the eggs in battle, and likewise, the heroes can free the Yoshis by breaking the eggs. Eventually, they defeat Sunnycide, and everyone, including the Yoshis, Toadbert, and Baby Bowser, escapes Yoob's through his digestive tract, while Yoob seems to stop functioning altogether.

If Mario and Luigi return to Yoshi's Island, they can find Yoob's inactive body still on the cliffside. They are able to re-enter Yoob's intestines as they wish, though they must exit through the digestive tract again.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

The Yoob in the Super Mario-kun volume 36
The Yoob and his backstory in the Super Mario-Kun volume 36.

In the Super Mario-kun, Yoob appears in volume 36. Unlike in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Yoob originally was just a giant, carefree, friendly Yoshi who is gluttonous. His body is used as a vessel for Sunnycide, as Sunnycide takes control of the giant Yoshi and turns him into a Yoob. After the brothers get eaten, they defeat Sunnycide inside, which reverts the Yoob to his normal state. The giant Yoshi then eats the Cobalt Star Shards, which causes the brothers to panic, and ends the chapter. They manage to get the shards out of him.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Yoob resembles a magenta Yoshi, except he is much larger and fatter (and gets even bigger when the Shroobs zap him), has black spines, a black saddle, blue shoes, a green underbelly, black irises, red pupils, and pincers for hands. Yoob bears a loose resemblance to Barney the Dinosaur, the host of the educational children's programs Barney & The Backyard Gang and Barney & Friends. As a matter of fact, a Nintendo Power issue predating the release of Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time mentioned the similarities in a pre-release screenshot of the game.[citation needed]
