Starfy himself was still referred to as "Stafy" in English until ''The Legendary Starfy'' (the fifth game in the series) was released in 2009, relocalizing the name in the west. As far as I know, the older games were never retroactively called as such, since the apparent western name of the series takes after its fifth and only game. Even ''Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia'', which reportedly looked up our names, uses ''Densetsu no Stafy 3''. So, why "''Densetsu no Sta'''r'''fy''" here? It's a weirdly eclectic, anachronistic mix of Japanese and localization. The first four games, including Densetsu no Stafy 3, are officially referred to as the Densetsu no Stafy games in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. 「スタフィー」 (Sutafī) more literally translates to Stafy. Starfy himself was still referred to as "Stafy" in English until The Legendary Starfy (the fifth game in the series) was released in 2009, relocalizing the name in the west.
