During the introductory cutscene of the campaign, Mario falls through an M-shaped portal made of black goop, which transports him from the Mushroom Kingdom to Lake Lapcat. It is a colorful, open area primarily inhabited by various colored kittens, including calico kittens and their parents. To match this theming around cats, nearly all of the elements of Lake Lapcat, including signs, archways, trees, shrubs, flowers, rainbows, and even the sun, include feline features such as fur, tails, and cat ears. Additionally, cat-themed seagulls, as well as enemies and bosses that appear in the Super Mario 3D World campaign, can be found throughout the area with the same modifications. However, all of these cat-like enemies function identically across both campaigns, with the exception of Cat Goombas, which are darker and do not dive. Despite this, Cat Bullet Bills retain their homing functionality. | ||

In the middle of the lake is the Fury Sun, a large mass of black goop that protects Fury Bowser while he is not active. When Fury Bowser becomes active, the clear daytime sky changes to nighttime during an intense rainstorm, and he shoots Disaster Spikes that plunge into the ground and walls, becoming platforms that Mario can jump on and traverse areas differently with. While collecting a Cat Shine during Fury Bowser's rampages forces him to retreat, he can only be directly battled through a power-up unique to Lake Lapcat, the Giga Bell. Three Giga Bells can be found on large pedestals across the archipelago, each of which correspond to a set of four islands that share a similar visual theme. | ||
==Islands== | ==Islands== | ||
Lake Lapcat is split into twelve named islands and various smaller pieces of land surrounding them. Each of the twelve islands contains a lighthouse that is covered in black goop when Mario first encounters it. By collecting any Cat Shine on the island, the goop on its lighthouse is removed and that lighthouse's light dissolves any goop nearby, sometimes allowing access to additional challenges. Every island contains five Cat Shines that are collected through gameplay challenges. On each island, three Cat Shines are obtained through unique challenges (though some are reused between islands), one is obtained by collecting the five Cat Shine Shards around the island, and the last is hidden behind a set of Fury Blocks somewhere on the island that Mario must coax Fury Bowser into attacking to access the Cat Shine. | Lake Lapcat is split into twelve named islands and various smaller pieces of land surrounding them. Every island contains five Cat Shines that are collected through gameplay challenges. On each island, three Cat Shines are obtained through unique challenges (though some are reused between islands), which must be done by collecting the first one, then to return to the island to collect the second one and so on, one is obtained by collecting the five Cat Shine Shards around the island, and the last is hidden behind a set of Fury Blocks somewhere on the island that Mario must coax Fury Bowser into attacking to access the Cat Shine. Although the Cat Shine Shards and the Fury Blocks always appear if the respective mission is incomplete, black goop may prevent either Cat Shine Shards or Fury Blocks from being accessible until the first Cat Shine is collected. | ||
The twelve islands are split into three major regions of four islands each: the Lakeside region, which contains Fur Step Island, Scamper Shores, Pounce Bounce Isle, and Fort Flaptrap and has a yellow color scheme, the Ruins region, which contains Slipskate Slope, Clawswipe Colosseum, Trickity Tower, and Crisp Climb Castle and has a blue color scheme, and the Wasteland region, which contains Risky Whisker Island, Pipe Path Tower, Roiling Roller Isle, and Mount Magmeow and has a red color scheme. Each of these regions also has a Giga Bell at or near their center, each of which is named after its respective region. Collecting a certain amount of Cat Shines, the number which increases as the game progress, activates these Giga Bells and allows Giga Cat Mario to battle Fury Bowser. While only the Lakeside region is initially available to explore, if Fury Bowser is defeated in battle once, the Ruins region rises from the water and becomes available as well. In addition to the sixty-five Cat Shines found directly on the islands, there are also thirty-five individual Cat Shines scattered around Lake Lapcat as a whole. These extraneous Cat Shines are typically found within one of the three Giga Bell regions, with some being located between regions on the waters of the lake. Some Cat Shines are initially covered in, and surrounded by, black goop, making them inaccessible until a nearby lighthouse is lit up, which removes the goop. | |||

Lake Lapcat | |
---|---|
Lake Lapcat in the rain | |
First appearance | Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (2021) |
Inhabitants | Kittens, Neko Parents, cat variations of enemies |
Lake Lapcat is a cat-themed archipelago exclusive to the Bowser's Fury campaign of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.
Lake Lapcat is entirely surrounded by black goop that Mario and Bowser Jr. must work to remove throughout the course of the campaign by collecting Cat Shines.
Islands[edit]
Lake Lapcat is split into twelve named islands and various smaller pieces of land surrounding them. Each of the twelve islands contains a lighthouse that is covered in black goop when Mario first encounters it. By collecting any Cat Shine on the island, the goop on its lighthouse is removed and that lighthouse's light dissolves any goop nearby, sometimes allowing access to additional challenges. Every island contains five Cat Shines that are collected through gameplay challenges.
If he is defeated in battle for the third time, the Wasteland region also appears.
After completing the first "Make the Lighthouse Shine" mission and falling off of Fur Step Island into the land below, it is not accessible again until Giant Bowser has been defeated once and the player sees the credits and returns to gameplay, upon which Mario begins back on Fur Step Island. After this, a new island named Lucky Isle appears in one of five set locations each time Fury Bowser begins rampaging, offering up to five Cat Shines, one from each location.
Cat Shines[edit]

In addition to the sixty-five Cat Shines found directly on the islands, there are also thirty-five individual Cat Shines scattered around Lake Lapcat as a whole. These extraneous Cat Shines are typically found within one of the three Giga Bell regions, with some being located between regions on the waters of the lake. Some Cat Shines are initially covered in, and surrounded by, black goop, making them inaccessible until a nearby lighthouse is lit up, which removes the goop.

Climb to the Shine | Cat Mario is required to obtain this Cat Shine. In between Pounce Bounce Isle and Fort Flaptrap, there is an island with a Cat Wheel that Cat Mario must spin to raise up a platform, which can then be climbed to reach the Cat Shine. The player can also jump off of Plessie to obtain this Cat Shine. | |
Shoreside Rabbit Plays Tag | Mario or Plessie must make contact with a large rabbit that flees from Mario whenever he approaches it. Bowser Jr. can also collect the Cat Shine by hitting the rabbit himself. | |
Hurry! Dash and Dive! | After hitting a Timer Gate near the waterfall tunnel, Mario has to collect the Cat Shine by riding Plessie to the end of the tunnel before time runs out. | |
Lost Kitten by the Shore | Mario must find a calico kitten located right next to the Giga Bell back to its parent, which sits by a tree near the Giga Bell. | |
Bounce and Trounce in the Clouds | After reaching an island with some Mushroom Trampolines, Mario can bounce on one of them to reach a Cloud Cannon. After that, he must defeat every single enemy in an obstacle course. | |
Toad Brigade: Lost Leader | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after the story is completed. Near the gate to Scamper Shores, Captain Toad can be seen being surrounded by a group of Cat Biddybuds. Once all of them are defeated, Captain Toad will award Mario with the Cat Shine. | |
Plessie Medal Collector | Mario must ride on Plessie to collect some Plessie Medals surrounding the area. If Mario collects all of them, he will obtain a Cat Shine. | |
Plessie Medal Catcher | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after completing the story. Mario must ride on Plessie to collect some more Plessie Medals surrounding the area. If Mario collects all of them, he will obtain a Cat Shine. |

Slippery Skirmish | After ground-pounding a Ground-Pound Switch, Mario and Bowser Jr. must defeat several Cat Snow Pokeys and Cat Cheep Cheeps in a small arena. | |
Gazing Down at the Islands | Mario must make Fury Bowser break some Fury Blocks near the Ruins Giga Bell to reveal a Clear Pipe Cannon, which takes Mario to a small area in the sky with some Dash Panels. At the end of the area, there is a floating island with a Cat Shine. | |
Hurry! Swim and Slide! | The player must pass through a Timer Gate to trigger a long obstacle course on the water. The obstacle course leads Mario to a Cat Shine in front of the Lakeside Giga Bell. | |
Cold Cove Combat | After ground-pounding a Ground-Pound Switch at the island which leads to Slipskate Slope, Mario and Bowser Jr. must defeat several Cat Fire Piranha Plants, Cat Goombas and Cat Goomba Towers in a small arena. | |
Lost Kittens near the Ruins | Mario must find three calico kittens located in the Ruins area back to its parent, which sits by the Giga Bell. This Cat Shine cannot be obtained until the Lost Kitten by the Shore Cat Shine has been obtained. The first kitten is found near the Clear Pipe Cannon that takes Mario to Slipskate Slope, the second kitten is found on top of the gate to Clawswipe Colosseum, and the third kitten is found near the entrance to Crisp Climb Castle. | |

Toad Brigade: Stuck under the Slope | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after the main story is completed. Mario has to find Yellow Toad, who is under a part of Slipskate Slope. To find him, the player must fall under the island near the start of the slope, and quickly go to a ledge where Yellow Toad can be found. | |
Toad Brigade: Cuddly Castaway | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after the main story is completed. The player must find Banktoad on a small island located within some black goop. He can be reached by using Fling Poles on other nearby small islands. | |
Plessie Medal Mania | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after the story is completed. Mario must ride on Plessie to collect more Plessie Medals surrounding the Ruins Giga Bell area. If Mario collects all of them, he will obtain a Cat Shine. |
Wasteland Giga Bell[edit]

---|---|---|
Footprint Free-for-all | After ground-pounding a Ground-Pound Switch near the Wasteland Giga Bell, Mario and Bowser Jr. must defeat some Cat Stingbies, Cat Innertube Goombas and Cat Hammer Bros. in a small arena. There are some POW Blocks near the walls to make the fight easier. | |
Spin, Scramble, Shine | Cat Mario is required to obtain this Cat Shine. In a small island near Risky Whisker Island, there is a Cat Wheel that must be spun to raise up a platform on another nearby island which can then be climbed to reach the Cat Shine. The other island can be reached by jumping on some small platforms or by swimming in near some Cat Cheep Cheeps. The player can also jump off of Plessie to reach this Cat Shine. | |
On the Floodgate's Edge | Mario must reach the top of a large floodgate with sections which are made out of Fury Blocks by jumping onto it from a sunken ship that is triggered by Fury Bowser. After that, Mario must walk on the top of the floodgate to reach the Cat Shine. Cat Mario can also climb up the floodgate to obtain the Cat Shine, while the player can also jump to the top of the floodgate with Plessie. | |
Hurry! Climb the Falls! | After ground-pounding a Ground-Pound Switch next to a waterfall, Mario must traverse through an obstacle course with some Donut Blocks under a time limit to reach the Cat Shine. Cat Mario can obtain the Cat Shine much more easily, as he can climb up a special path made for him. | |
Surprise Prizefight | Mario must use Plessie to traverse through a path in the sea surrounded by black goop. At the end of the path, there is an island with a Ground-Pound Switch. After ground-pounding it, Mario and Bowser Jr. must defeat some Cat Goombas and Cat Goomba Towers, a Cat Spike and a hidden Cat Coin Coffer. | |
Jump and Thump in the Clouds | After traversing through another secret path with Plessie, Mario will reach an island with a Red Jump Panel which takes Mario to a section with a Cloud Cannon. Like the previous missions, it will take Mario to an obstacle course with Super Stars and Dash Panels. This time, there are also more enemies and some Red-Jump Panels. After defeating all of the enemies, Mario will obtain a Cat Shine. | |
Wasteland Rabbit Plays Tag | Like the previous missions that involved catching rabbits, Mario or Plessie must make contact with a large rabbit that flees from Mario whenever he approaches it to obtain the Cat Shine. Bowser Jr. can also collect the Cat Shine by hitting the rabbit by himself. | |
Lost Kittens in the Wasteland | Mario must find five calico kittens located in the Wasteland area back to its parent, which sits by the Giga Bell. This Cat Shine cannot be obtained until the Lost Kittens near the Ruins Cat Shine has been obtained. The first kitten is found on the opposite side of the Wasteland Giga Bell where the parent sits. The second kitten is found on a pier with Dash Panels on it at the beginning of the Wasteland area. The third kitten is found near the entrance to Pipe Path Tower, while the fourth kitten is found inside an alcove underneath the entrance to Risky Whisker Island. Finally, the fifth kitten is found near the lighthouse of Mount Magmeow. | |
Shining on a Hidden Isle | Mario can use Plessie's high jump to reach an island surrounded by black goop to obtain the Cat Shine. This is easier during the Fury Bowser phase, as a sunken ship with a Dash Panel will emerge from the sea. | |
Hurry! Slip to the Shine! | After passing through a Timer Gate, an obstacle course with really tight platforms suddenly appears. The player must then use Plessie to navigate through the obstacle course under a time limit to obtain a Cat Shine. | |
Gazing Down at Lava | A Cat Shine is located on a small floating island which circles around the peak of Mount Magmeow. If Mario climbs all the way to the top of Mount Magneow and waits for the floating island to arrive, he may then use the Cat Mario form to climb a wall to the top of the island. | |
Toad Brigade: Hot Pursuit | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after the main story is completed. Hint Toad appears on Mount Magmeow just below the peak, where a Cat Conkdor is attempting to attack him. After Mario defeats this Conkdor, Hint Toad will award Mario with a Cat Shine. | |
Plessie Medal Master | This Cat Shine can only be obtained after the story is completed. Mario must ride on Plessie to collect Plessie Medals that are surrounding the Wasteland Giga Bell area. If Mario collects all of them, he will obtain a Cat Shine. |
Collectibles[edit]
Lake Lapcat features Cat Shines, collectibles that are scattered throughout the kingdom, similarly to Power Stars, Shine Sprites and Power Moons of other games. These shines are used to awaken the power of the Giga Bells once enough have been collected. The lighthouses on each island are cleansed of goop once the first Cat Shine on that island is collected. Five Cat Shine Shards also appear per island, which give a Cat Shine once they are all collected. Plessie Medals appear in various locations on the lake and grant Cat Shines if they are collected fast enough. Coins also appear throughout Lake Lapcat.
