Merge[edit]

The Mega Guy should be merged with this article.
The preceding unsigned comment was added by CBFan5 (talk).

The reason Big Shy Guy was separated from Mega Guy was due to this proposal, though in retrospect, it shouldn't have been dragged into it since Big Lantern Ghost was a boss while the big Shy Guys are regular enemies. Additionally, I had completely failed to take into account the appearances of other big Shy Guys in spinoffs such as Mario Tennis Aces and the Mario Party series, not to mention pre-release Yoshi's Story, that no longer have a single article to cleanly be relegated to. Rest assured, I have my eyes on a counterproposal, but at this point I'm waiting to see if Paper Mario: The Origami King has any depiction of a big Shy Guy first. Merge Big Shy Guy back to Mega Guy[edit]

Merge 6-0
Big Shy Guy was originally split from Mega Guy earlier this year when it was pulled into a failed attempt to merge the Big Lantern Ghost boss from Paper Mario with the Mega Kantera enemy from Yoshi's New Island. To be honest, I don't entirely understand why it was included in the proposal in the first place, and LinkTheLefty, the original proposer, has since stated that they shouldn't have been.

I am now proposing that they be re-merged. Splitting Big Shy Guy and Mega Guy is completely inconsistent with how we treat every other large enemy variant. There's really no difference between the two other than the name, but giant enemies have gone through name changes before, including in Japanese. The biggest differences merely come from the vastly different gameplay styles of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Yoshi's Island. Also, there are other big Shy Guys in the franchise that aren't covered anywhere and now don't have a clear page to be covered on as a result of the split.

To address the previous arguments in favor of splitting, the main one used was "I doubt the developers intended these to be the same". Well, that doesn't really matter. First of all, it's complete speculation whether or not the Yoshi's New Island developers had Super Mario Advance in mind when adding a larger variant of Shy Guys. Second, that's inconsistent with our treatment of large enemies. I highly doubt the Super Mario Galaxy 2 developers had the SMB3 cartoon in mind when they added a large variant of Paragoombas either, but that doesn't warrant a split for what is otherwise the exact same concept. Not to mention following this line of thinking would lead us down an endless rabbit hole of speculation and illogical splits. The only other argument was the claim that "there are other instances of large versions of enemies being split" which used Big Bloopers and the Super Blooper boss from Paper Mario as evidence, though this isn't actually applicable since the Super Blooper is a Blooper Nanny rather than a standard Blooper. If any valid examples of this are found however, I'd be happy to address them in the comments.

Support[edit]

  1. Waluigi Time (talk) Per proposal.
  2. LinkTheLefty (talk) Yes, adding the Shy Guy in the Big Lantern Ghost proposal was total misjudgment on my part, mainly as the Big Lantern Ghost is a boss and the Mega Kantera is an enemy (though I would not be opposed to merging as this role overlap happens all the time, but maybe it can be readdressed by someone else or whenever another big Lantern Ghost appears). To date, big Shy Guys have also appeared in Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart Tour (as Mega form), and pre-release footage of Yoshi's Story; they've also technically appeared in Yoshi's Island and Mario Kart DS going by Super Mario 64 logic (i.e. enemies are considered tiny or huge in relation to the player character). I'm probably overlooking even more, but because of the split of the same idea between two appearances, they lack a decent place to go. Merging the articles would fix this problem, which wasn't noticed when they were split. The only thing I'd add, besides reiterating old arguments in the previous proposal, would be that perhaps the new name should be "Mega Shy Guy" if that is the name that shows up in Mario Kart Tour.
  3. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) Giving this a big old "ditto."
  4. Benjaminkirsc (talk): Per proposal.

Just a heads up: considering the discussion on fire-spitting "Piranha Plants", the Super Blooper might not be a Blooper Nanny, but that's a separate issue. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:50, November 18, 2020 (EST)

Using the same logic as we do for Fire Piranha Plants, since there already is a standard(ish) Blooper in Paper Mario that doesn't have Blooper Nanny behavior, wouldn't that leave the Super Blooper where it currently is? --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 14:39, November 19, 2020 (EST)
The Super Blooper isn't exactly called a "Blooper Nanny" in Paper Mario, just a Blooper (or more specifically, "the biggest Blooper ever" according to Goombario). Could be it happens to have been given Blooper Nanny-esque traits, just like the Big Blooper from that Dance Dance Revolution game. So like fire-spitting "Piranha Plants" and fishing-rod "Lakitus", it may be worth a second look. But again, different discussion. LinkTheLefty (talk) 15:39, November 25, 2020 (EST)
Also, while I'm not absolutely sure, I think the Electro-Blooper was also somewhat larger than the normal Blooper. It seemed more a gradual enlargement with different traits added. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:53, November 26, 2020 (EST)
