World 3-4 is the first of two athletic levels, and sixth level overall, in World 3 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It is unlocked by completing World 3-Tower. This course is unique in that it is intended to be played through twice in order to progress in the game.
The first time this level is played, the only accessible exit is a secret exit which unlocks World 3-5 and a Red Toad House. After completing World 3-5, the player gains access to a ! Switch. There are Dotted-Line Blocks in Worlds 3-4 and 3-5 which turn into solid Red Blocks when this switch is activated. The course must then be played through again, with the Red Blocks allowing access to an underground path leading to the "regular" exit, which unlocks World 3-Castle.
In the Prima Games guide,[page number needed] the exit flag colors are incorrectly swapped, with the first exit having the regular black flag, and the second exit having the secret red flag. Also, the pipe leading to the regular exit is mistakenly green and missing the top of it.
Layout[edit]
The player starts on ice with a moving ice platform in front of them. A Penguin Suit is obtainable from one of the ? Blocks. The player then meets a red Koopa Troopa and another moving ice platform. Further down, there is another moving ice platform with a Fire Bro. A smaller moving ice platform follows, then two large patches of suspended ice above moving ice platforms and red Koopa Paratroopas. The midway point follows, where the player finds two Goombas. This is followed by six fast-moving ice platforms with narrow strips of suspended ice and another red Koopa Troopa. There are two paths from this area depending on whether the ! Switch has been activated.
First exit ("secret exit")[edit]
This exit is represented by the red flag used for hidden goals throughout the game and is the only exit available before the ! Switch is activated. To the right of the six moving ice platforms is a Roulette Block, followed by more moving ice platforms which obstruct the players' path. Two Fire Bros. also try to prevent the player from progressing. Just before the flagpole is a POW Block, more Koopa Troopas and a large moving ice platform. The POW Block causes Hidden Coins to fall onto the moving ice platform. This exit unlocks World 3-5 and a Red Toad House.
Second exit ("normal exit")[edit]
Below the six moving ice platforms is a row of dotted-line blocks. Activating the ! Switch on the World 3 map turns these blocks solid, allowing the player character to walk on them. The row of blocks lead to a red Warp Pipe which transports the player character to an underground area, which features more rows of red blocks above chasms, as well as ice platforms that can be thrown to collect coins and attack Goombas. Another red pipe then leads back to the surface and the pole. The snow overworld music plays in this area. This exit unlocks World 3-Castle.
World 3-4's normal exit can also be reached before its secret exit through a precise exploit using Ice Mario or Penguin Mario.[1]
