It is the first Super Mario game released for a handheld console and the fifth entry in the series. In Japan, it is recognized as the fourth. Unlike previous installments, the game was not developed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo EAD, but by Nintendo R&D1, with Gunpei Yokoi as guiding producer.
