World 1-2 is the second level of World 1, and subsequently, of New Super Mario Bros. Completing this level through the normal exit will unlock World 1-3, whilst exiting the level from the secret exit will give the player access to World 1-Tower.
Layout[edit]
The level begins with Mario Ground Pounding into the cave, breaking a few Brick Blocks directly below him and collecting some coins. Right after this are two ? Blocks, one of which contains either a Super Mushroom or a Fire Flower, depending on Mario's current form. There are also additional coins that can be collected with more Ground Pounding. Just after this, a Goomba appears, the first of many throughout the level. The first Star Coin can also be located nearby in an alcove.
After this are more enemies, including Koopa Troopas, as well as coins. There is a long row of Brick Blocks overhead, one of which contains a 1-Up Mushroom. The second Star Coin appears just after this, surrounded with blocks that can be broken either by Ground Pounding or with a Koopa Troopa's shell. After a seesaw is the level's Checkpoint Flag.
Up next are Piranha Plants in pipes. A Hidden Block containing a Super Star can be found in this area. The first pipe can also be entered to find a secret area with a few extra coins, as well as a red Koopa Troopa whose shell can be used to clear away a row of Brick Blocks below, revealing another hidden area filled with Goombas, as well as a ? Block containing a Mega Mushroom.
Back in the main area, Mario must traverse a few more obstacles in the level, including enemies and a seesaw, before entering a Warp Pipe to return to the surface, where the Goal Pole allows him to finish the level. Alternatively, in a nod to World 1-2 from the original Super Mario Bros., Mario can continue upward and to the right to find the level's third and final Star Coin and a pipe leading to a secret Goal Pole.
Red-flag exit[edit]
Towards the end of the level, there will be a small gap at the top of the screen like World 1-2 in the original Super Mario Bros. that Mario can access using the seesaw. Running across the gap will lead to the third Star Coin and a pipe, which will lead to the red-flag exit. Using the red-flag exit unlocks a different path that directly leads to a secret Toad House and the tower of that world.
