The course contains mushrooms of the normal and expanding/shrinking varieties. Stone Spikes appear in normally difficult-to-reach places to toss sandy-colored stones at the player. The course also contains platforms that move when stepped on.

Block]] with a Stone Spike above it, followed by another lift with two Stone Spikes above it. More Mushroom Platforms are found, followed by more lifts and Stone Spikes. Dry Desert Mushrooms, or Layer-Cake Desert-5, is the fifth course of Layer-Cake Desert in New Super Mario Bros. U. It is an athletic mushroom course with Stone Spikes and moving platforms. This course is unlocked by completing Stoneslide Tower, and completing this level unlocks Blooming Lakitus.

Layout[edit]

The course begins near a lift, which is found below a Mushroom Platform with two Stone Spikes on it. There is a ? Block with a Stone Spike above it, followed by another lift with two Stone Spikes above it. More Mushroom Platforms are found, followed by more lifts and Stone Spikes. A Stretch Shroom is found with a ? Block above it, followed by three Stretch Shrooms beneath two Stone Spikes. The Checkpoint Flag is then found before another ? Block. More lifts are found below another Stretch Shroom with Stone Spikes above it. More lifts, Stretch Shrooms, and Stone Spikes are found in a section of the level with a Green Ring. A Koopa Troopa is found on a Mushroom Platform, which can be used to hit a Roulette Block beneath it. Finally, there is a lift that travels on a track beneath multiple Stretch Shrooms and Stone Spikes, ending in front of the Goal Pole.
