Earth Tremor is a Special Move that can be used in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its Nintendo Switch remake. It is learned when Mario gains the Diamond Star at the end of Chapter 1, after defeating Hooktail.

Description[edit]

Mario and his partner jump on an enlarged Diamond Star as a long blue gauge appears, with several circles along it in random positions. The gauge will start filling up with a green bar from left to right, and when it passes through a circle, the A button must be pressed. If it is not pressed, or the timing is off, the Action Command stops. Earth Tremor's attack is piercing and is capable of damaging invisible enemies.

In the remake, if Mario's active partner is frozen or immobilized, a Black Shy Guy will carry them off-stage.

The potential attack power increases as each of the five gauges are completed, shown by the Diamond Star itself becoming larger; when a gauge is filled, the next gauge will add an extra circle and the green bar's speed will increase. The attack power starts off at 1, and can reach a maximum of 6 if done perfectly. With each bar completed, the height reached by the tremors also increases:

  • No gauges completed: 1 damage, only hits ground enemies. (e.g. Goombas and Koopa Troopas)
  • 1 completed: 2 damage, also hits low hovering enemies (e.g. Lava Bubbles and Ruff Puffs in their low position)
  • 2 completed: 3 damage, height difference has no effect
  • 3 completed: 4 damage, also hits normal flying/floating enemies (e.g. Paragoombas and Lakitus)
  • 4 completed: 5 damage, hits enemies on the ceiling, if just barely (e.g. Swoopers and Swoopulas)
  • All completed: 6 damage, hits all enemies
