Princess Peach, Tippi and Boomer, near the captive Gnaw.

Gnaw is a large, imposing creature purple in color with blue spots covering its body; Gnaw also has several rows of sharp teeth and retractable spikes on it's head (despite their size, they will not dealt any damage on Mario or Peach if they jump on them. The Gnaw is also immune to any form of physical harm, making it undefeatable.

The Gnaw is used by Merlee as a guard in her mansion, it is also said by Tippi that Gnaw is Merlee's favorite pet.

In Super Paper Mario, Mimi, during her takeover of Merlee's Mansion, seemingly chained the Gnaw to a door, making it incapable of attacking. If Mario or Princess Peach were to approach the chained Gnaw, it would try to catch them in its mouth; if Gnaw succeeded in doing just that, it would give Mario or Princess Peach to some Gnips, who would proceed to throw them out of Merlee's Mansion. The reason it did this was to ensure that Mario and Peach did not get hurt by Mimi.

If Mario or Princess Peach managed to obtain a hidden key in Merlee's Mansion, they would need to sneak by Gnaw and use it on the door the Gnaw was near. If Mario or Princess Peach managed to use the key to unlock the door, they would free Gnaw, who would proceed to chase a nearby Mimi all throughout Merlee's Mansion.

You can occasionally buy the Catch Card for the Gnaw from Flint for 113 coins

In the PAL version of the game, this enemy is called a "Growl" instead.

Tattle

"This is Gnaw, Merlee's favorite pet. It's certainly the biggest of of the bunch... But some mean person tied it down... And I think it's worried that this mean person wants to hurt you... Good Gnaw!"

Trivia

  • Gnaws are similar to Chomps in that they are doglike creatures with sharp teeth (although Chomps actually try to hurt/kill Mario). Mimi is the Chapter 2 boss, like Tutankoopa from the first Paper Mario. Gnaw chasing after Mimi could be a refernece to Tutankoopa being chased off by a chomp at the end of his chapter.
