The Giant Spear Man is, in essence, simply a giant Pirate Goom that appears in Wario Land II (where Pirate Gooms were renamed Spear Men). This large creature was a member of the Black Sugar Pirates, and was Captain Syrup's right-hand Goom during the events of said game.

Interestingly, the Giant Spear Man was also the guard of Captain Syrup's personal treasure collection. In the end, Wario got his revenge against Captain Syrup by stealing the treasure the Giant Spear Man was supposed to protect. The First Mate of the Black Sugar Pirates is a giant Spear Man that appeared in Wario Land II. Throughout the events of the game, Captain Maple Syrup deployed the unnamed First Mate to many locations on Kitchen Island to try to defeat Wario, who was plundering the island.

The First Mate had similar battle tactics to a regular Spear Man, he would slowly walk back and forth, attempting to stab Wario with his spear. The spear prevented the anti-hero from using any head-on attacks; instead, Wario had to Ground Pound him from above. After ten hits, the First Mate would surrender, and Wario could continue his looting. Although the First Mate engaged Wario in many battles, the purple-clad thief always emerged the victor.

The First Mate was also trusted enough to guard the treasure of the Black Sugar Pirates. After Captain Syrup was defeated at the end of the game, the First Mate tried to stop Wario from stealing Captain Syrup's treasure, but once again he lost to the powerful anti-hero and the treasure was stolen. The movie seen during the end credits show him following Wario to his castle, revealing that he switched to Wario's side after his final defeat.
