Websites, wikis, books, and magazines going back to at least 1999 make the distinction of between the Wide Screen series and New Wide Screen series. According to them, the original Wide Screen series ('81-'82) had gold plated fronts while the New series ('82-'91) have other colors. Thusly, Donkey Kong Jr. (New Wide Screen), Mario's Cement Factory, Super Mario Bros. (Game & Watch), and Mario the Juggler are NWS and there are no Super Mario original WS. However, Nintendo's own G&W history site claims Super Mario Bros. 1988 release as the first NWS, which means Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario's Cement Factory are from the original WS series. | |||
This discrepancy puzzled me so I looked at the original packaging. DKJr. NWS alt box.jpg and Mario's Cement Factory NWS box alt.png simply say "Wide Screen". It's not just these two games, the Jugglers manual also lacks "New" despite being the very last of the LCD G&Ws. I've come to the conclusion that "New" Wide Screen is a fanmade term originating from the '90s. Nintendo sloppily copied and misapplied it when creating their history site. Fake "sprites"[edit]

DK Jr.'s and MCF's box arts simply say "Wide Screen". It's not just these two games, the Juggler's manual also lacks "New" despite being the very last of the LCD G&Ws. The English [1] [2], Japanese [3] [4], and French ads [5] from the '80s all lack "New" and make no distinction between the two.
I've come to the conclusion that "New" Wide Screen is a fanmade term originating from the '90s. Nintendo sloppily copied and misapplied it when creating their history site. I suggest deleting "New" from all mentions of "New Wide Screen" and renaming Donkey Kong Jr. (New Wide Screen)--Platform (talk) 02:01, April 2, 2025 (EDT).
(Cont.) Here's a translated quote from a Japanese blog:
By the way, this "The New Widescreen" series (other titles included) "Donkey Kong Jr." and "Mario's Cement Factory" conveniently called this to distinguish it from the conventional widescreen series, but as far as I know, there is no mention of the series name on any of the game packages, instruction manuals, leaflets, or flyers . And another blog:
This low-cost series is called "New Wide" separately from the previous widescreen series. It is not an official series name, just like the Silver series.
